Boulder Run Blockbuster to Permanently Close Wednesday Night

The store will shut its doors at 10 p.m.

Rainy day movie rentals just became scarcer for area residents.

The Boulder Run location of Blockbuster will close its doors at 10 p.m. tonight.   Store employees were busy packing boxes of DVDs today which are being shipped to other store locations.

Today, customers can purchase previously viewed DVDs.  DVD’s labeled $14.99 are on sale 2 for $20.00. DVD’s labeled $9.99 were selling for  4 for $20.00

Handwritten signs on the window and door announced the store closing.  Employees were unable to discuss details of the sudden closing.  Saturday was the final rental day for consumers.

Blockbuster was still listed as a tenant on the Hekemian website, owner of the Boulder Run Shopping Center. Messages left for comment on the closure were not immediately returned.

“We are sorry to see any business move of out of Wyckoff,” said Mayor Kevin Rooney. “We hope the location does not stay vacant long and the new tenant becomes an asset to the residents,” he added.

Locally, Blockbuster has retail locations in Fair Lawn, Hillsdale and Pompton Lakes.

Residents looking for DVD rentals in town can find movies at the Wyckoff Public Library and at the Redbox kiosk located inside the Stop& Shop grocery store.

Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy in September 2010, citing competition from Redbox, Netflix, and iTunes. In April, Dish Network bought Blockbuster's assets at auction. Blockbuster is included on the Wall Street Journal’s list of brands predicted to disappear in 2011.
