David Howard was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a police officer, according to Ramsey Police.
A Wyckoff man was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly tried to push two Glen Rock boys in front of a moving train at the Ramsey Main Street train station, Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney said Tuesday. David Howard, 48 of Wyckoff, was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly grabbing two passengers waiting for the train and “moving them towards the train tracks while the train was still moving towards the station,” Gurney said. Howard was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a police officer, according to Ramsey Police. The passengers, 7- and 9-year-old brothers from Glen Rock, were waiting for the train with their mother and grandmother when the two got up to get a better …

Ridgewood used 60 million more gallons than allowed in 2010 — and even greater number in 2011 — and will face penalties of at least $38,000, the DEP said
Wyckoff's embattled water utility is being fined nearly $40,000 by the state for exceeding their water allocation in 2010, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection told Patch Friday. According to DEP spokesman Bob Considine, Ridgewood Water company exceeded its 344.4 million gallon allocation in 2010 by 60.13 million gallons and as a result is facing a $38,000 penalty. Ridgewood Water has reportedly appealed the ruling, but another fine is right around the corner for the village. "In 2011, Ridgewood [Water] went over its allocation by 10 million gallons more than it did in 2010. A fine for 2011 has not been determined yet," Considine said. The DEP determines the water allocation based on the population, amount of homes and …

Ratepayers will now pay $4.42 per 1,000 gallons, up nine cents over the current rate
Residents in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Wyckoff and Midland Park will be paying more money for their water following the Ridgewood Village Council's unanimous decision to hike rates an additional 2 percent — their second hike for 2012. Residents will now pay $4.42 per 1,000 gallons, up nine cents over the current rate. Village Manager Ken Gabbert said the hikes should become effective in a few weeks, once billing catches up. Despite the hikes — now up 5 percent for the year and 31 percent since 2009 — and a pending lawsuit, village officials maintain that ratepayers are still getting a good deal. Gabbert provided a document detailing the rates of water utilities in the surrounding area. The document shows Ridgewood rates being among the lowest…

Attorney Joseph Fiorenzo says Ridgewood Water illegally reapportioned water utility monies for village operations.
Negotiations to resolve a $3 million class action lawsuit filed by Wyckoff, Glen Rock and Midland Park alleging Ridgewood Water has bilked ratepayers out of millions, have stalled. Attorney Joseph Fiorenzo claims in the law suit filed in Superior Court in Bergen County that the Village of Ridgewood has "been engaged in sham accounting to artificially inflate the costs of the Water Utility and decrease the expenses of the village." The Hackensack-based attorney is accusing Ridgewood of falsely claiming that a 21 percent rate increase in 2010 and a 5 percent increase in 2011 were justified by an operating loss of more than $1 million in 2009-10. "Evidence revealed... that there was no 'loss' to justify the extraordinary water rate increase…

For the sixth year running — literally — Rob and Jacqueline Dill are putting together the fun-filled Splash and Dash event for kids from all over Bergen County. The race is being held Sunday, Sept. 4, at 8 a.m. at the Glen Rock Municipal Pool for kids between the ages of 6 and 13. Patch spoke with the Glen Rock couple about the event they put on every year just for kicks. Rob says the "short, fun race" — first swimming in the Municipal Pool then running out on the nearby grass — isn't a fund raiser, it's just something he does "out of the goodness of my heart." In addition to the organizational work and cash put out by the Dills, the Glen Rock Tri Club helps out with support on the ground and financially, Rob says. The deadline to sign up …
