National Lighthouse Day Shines In Cape May

Celebration commemorates national event and highlights New Jersey’s own lighthouses.

Lighthouses are curious structures. When taking in the mysterious, almost gothic implications of the tall buildings, jutting out from shorelines to shine light across the open waters, you can very easily forget these are functional and very important structures, even today in our digital age. Back before the satellites, however, they were a necessity. At Cape May Lighthouse, on Tuesday, you have the opportunity to learn just how needed they were and still are. The country’s National Lighthouse Celebration at the Cape May Lighthouse takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and promises education, and even a bit of historical romance, with your trip to Cape May County. Congress designated National Lighthouse Day on Aug. 7, 1989, marking the 200th …

Ocean Museum Brings War Lessons Close to Home

Exhibit offers evidence of war’s impact on a New Jersey community.

The corridor of time between Memorial Day and Independence Day tends to get people thinking of the sacrifices of America’s fighting forces, both past and present. With the impending anniversary of the United States' entry into World War II, that connection is felt even more this year, especially for New Jersey. Gary L. Edelson, of the Township of Ocean Historical Museum, 703 Deal Road, Ocean Township, said their current exhibit, Loved Ones Go to War: Local Stories of World War II, is about "remembering those who did so much for the war effort." "We have had exhibits about the war before, but for this one, we wanted to focus on the local story," Edelson said. "We have the story of fighting the war on the local front (black-out curtains, …

Summer Rocks On at PNC Arts Center

Monmouth County concert venue has complete roster of shows into September.

How many shows at the PNC Arts Center have you seen? If you live in New Jersey, the chances are good you’ve seen at least one. Was it the reunion of The Who? Was it Paul Simon and Brian Wilson, or maybe Elvis Costello and The Police? Squeeze or Rush? The open-air auditorium has been a staple of New Jersey summertime entertainment and has been wowing visitors far and wide for decades. Paul Davon, while not directly affiliated with the Arts Center, was so impressed he took it upon himself to get the word out about it. “In 2009, I visited New Jersey on holiday and heard great things about the Arts Center, so I went to watch Toby Keith and it was awesome," said Davon, a theater devotee and webmaster for PNCArtsCenter.com. "This year when I …

10 Days to Celebrate the Fourth of July in Philly

Multiple events include history, film, music and more under one Independence Day umbrella.

If there is any American town that would know something about Independence Day, it would have to be Philadelphia. So it isn't surprising that this city has scheduled 10 days worth of attractions to celebrate July Fourth. Elizabeth Evans, public relations agent for the Philadelphia Wawa Welcome America event said of the multiple-day activities, “(It is) the nation’s largest, free July Fourth festival in the heart of America's birthplace, from June 25 through July 4.” “There's no other place nationwide where families can experience the “Largest Free Concert in America”; two breathtaking fireworks displays; a "Go 4th and Learn" series offering free educational and interactive programs for young children and their parents; a day-long “Party on…

Balloon Festival: Patch Will Send You Into the Sky

Event celebrates its 30th season.

When is a balloon festival not (just) a balloon festival? That’s a tough question, especially when a huge yearly event is billed as such (I mean, it's called the Festival of Ballooning, after all) and there certainly are plenty of hot-air balloons to be displayed. Still, the Quick Chek Festival of Ballooning—in its 30th year, running from July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington—is also part amusement park, with a healthy number of rides, an arts-and-crafts emporium, a yoga and Zumba demonstration, and lots and lots of food. Of the 30 years, Quick Chek has been a major sponsor for 20. And for the first time, Patch is partnering with the festival to get you in at a great price. Between May 13 and 20, use this link to buy tickets …

High Line: There's Really Nothing Else Like It

Here's a day trip worth looking up

Some attractions are so unique and so curious, there are no equals, and if you want the experience, you must go. Such is the case for New York’s High Line. Built in the 1930s, the High Line was an elevated train line built 30 feet in the air. This kept the trains out of the streets of Manhattan's largest industrial district, the meatpacking area. The stretch of track was still active up until 1980, and then was left disused and subject to the whims of nature. Aside from being a recognizable landmark, the elevated tracks  also started gathering life in the form of grasses and other plants. Some might have considered it a haven for invasive species, but others with more imagination saw it for what it had become, and all it could be: a park …

Yo Ho, Is It a Pirate's Life for You?

Unique attraction includes pirate ship excitement on the Metedeconk River

This summer will find the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film hitting theaters. The movie is famously based on the ride found at the Disney theme parks Disneyland and Magic Kingdom, but flying to Florida or California hardly sounds like an affordable daytrip. Luckily, beginning this month, New Jersey residents will be set to sail with a pirate crew of their own. We know them as Rob and Jessica Corring on dry land, but once they set sail, they become Captain Scurvy and Jezebel of the sailing ship The Sea Gypsy II. Setting sail from Riverfront Marina in Brick Township, the boat cruises down the Metedeconk River for a trip that lasts roughly and hour and fifteen minutes. During that time, the kids can get face-painting “tattoos,” participate…
