Folks interested in the fun water activities available at the YMCA can visit this weekend for a sneak peek at their “Aquatics Spectacular.” "We are using this event to showcase some new offerings we are bringing to the Y including synchronized swimming and water polo and demonstrating our already existing water exercise programs," said YMCA Aquatics and Multisport Specialist Bryan McDonnell. Anyone can come to watch this event, McDonnell said, full members are even welcome to join in with the water exercise and water polo. 'Billy's Buddies' helps parents connect and offers specialized programming.
They come from all over New Jersey, and even from New York. They're parents that have hopes and dreams for their children, and the Wyckoff YMCA is the one place they can come together to discuss the trials and tribulations of having children with Down syndrome. And their children — ranging in age from newborns to 10-year-old children — are part of Billy’s Buddies. It was started after Wyckoff YMCA employee Christine Hourihan, who organized the Buddy Walk of Bergen County in 2004 with her family, was approached by the YMCA. The organization asked if a support group would be helpful. Hourihan jumped at the opportunity, she said, with “tears streaming down her face.” Her son Billy, for whom the organization is named, is now 10 years old. “It …

On Wednesday, March 6, come along with the Y to see an encore presentation of “Verdi’s Rigoletto” live in HD at the AMC Theatre at Garden State Plaza. Director Michael Mayer has placed his new production of Verdi’s towering tragedy in Las Vegas in 1960. Piotr Beczala is the womanizing Duke, Zeljko Lucic is his tragic sidekick, Rigoletto, and Diana Damrau is Rigoletto’s daughter, Gilda. Approximate show running time is 3:31. Upcoming program will attempt to help parents better understand ADHD
Children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder have trouble concentrating, controlling their behavior, planning ahead, or sitting still for more than a few minutes. Children can learn to adapt and live a productive life. Dr. Lisa Nalven Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician at the Kireker Center for Child Development of the Valley Hospital will discuss diagnosis and treatment, as well as home, school, and social issues your child may face. The Wyckoff Family YMCA held its annual meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 23. Y Board President Kevin Cornwell updated attendees — which included area residents, Wyckoff YMCA board, staff, members, and local officials — on programs such as new fitness outreach for cancer survivors. Also introduced were the Y’s expanding special needs efforts and comprehensive performing arts initiatives. Executive Director Joy Vottero, recognized the positive impact the Y’s corps of volunteers has had on its day-to-day operations and how each volunteer, member, and employee benefits the organization. This interactive discussion will try to help parents understand the academic, athletic, and social pressures of high school, according to a spokesperson for the Y. Vice President of Donor by Design Jon Simons will be a guest speaker and recognize the Y’s volunteer, member and staff contingent. Also on the agenda is the kick-off of the Y’s 2013 Strong Kids Campaign along with an overview of missions and goals for the coming year. The Wyckoff Family YMCA is hosting a blood drive in honor of Wyckoff resident Mike O’Shea on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Mike, a husband and father of three young children, was diagnosed in March 2012 with acute myelogenous leukemia," according to Wyckoff YMCA Sports Director Pat O'Hagan. Following an aggressive cycle of chemotherapy, Mike underwent a stem cell transplant on June 28, he said. The donor was found through the National Marrow Donor Program and, although the transplant was initially successful, after several months of recovery Mike started experiencing fevers and back pain, O'Hagan said. A recent bone marrow biopsy revealed that he had relapsed and the leukemia was coming back. O'Shea was at Memorial Sloan…

The Wyckoff Family YMCA Teen Leaders Club was hard at work last week making bracelets that were given out when a donation of any amount was made to help “Restore the Shore,” according to the Teen Leaders Club's Danielle Block. The club raised $330 at a booth they set up at the Y’s Holiday Marketplace. They look forward to going “Jersey Strong all year long” with monthly fundraising and community service efforts available to all teen leaders, Block said.
