Wyckoff's Emergency Response Leader Sad to Be Leaving

Debbie Kinney-Chen is looking for a new CERT leader to replace her and coordinate volunteers for local emergency response.

Wyckoff’s Community Emergency Response Team is looking for a new leader following the announcement recently that current coordinator Debbie Kinney-Chen will be stepping down as soon as a replacement is found. Working under the local Office of Emergency Management and overseen by Wyckoff Police Lieutenant Charlie Van Dyk, CERT trains volunteers to respond to emergency situations in the community. Currently there are about 50 members. Kinney-Chen has decided to step down, citing the need for more time with her family. She has been the coordinator since Wyckoff CERT’s inception three years ago. As a former volunteer for a county crisis team and a FEMA-certified volunteer, Kinney-Chen remembers being excited when she saw the advertisement in …

Fantastic!!!! Speaking of trees - does any one know what is going on in Hawthorne on Goffle Road? We went to the store and past the park and quite a few (more than 50) trees were cut down - and they, of course, were not dead! My uncle use to bring me to that park! It's on the left hand side of the road, again on Goffle Road.   more ›

I would love to see a small portion be used as a community garden. A section possibly with planted fruit trees and the rest for seasonal fruits and vegetables. Might require a small membership fee to purchase of tool seeds and other items. But to keep it environmental it should be.run without the use of fertilizers and should be kept organic.   more ›

Like a Good Neighbor, Diane is There

Longtime Wyckoff Library volunteer Diane Ulrich is being honored for two decades of service

Some people are just born to serve. Count Diane Ulrich — 35 year Wyckoff resident — among that esteemed group of people, whose big and decidedly unselfish hearts lead them to places like soup kitchens, hospitals and even the Wyckoff Public Library. After all, Good Samaritan Ulrich has been dedicating her time by delivering books to the Christian Health Care Center for the last 20 years. Once a month, the longtime member of the Friends of the Wyckoff Library packs up her car and visits the CHCC with carts full of books, books on tape, and even CDs for the elderly residents who want their fiction fix but can no longer see. “She’s a dynamo, a true library champion,” said Beth Wharton, president of the Friends of the Wyckoff Library. “Diane …

Congratulations,Diane! This is a well deserved honor. The word "volunteer" aptly describes your dedication to St Elizabeth, to the CHCC and to the Wyckoff Library. You epitomize what it means to be a "FRIEND" whether you are delivering books, serving meals to the homeless in the soup kitchen or just bringing smiles to all who receive your kindnesses. Kudos to you,Patsy Madden   more ›

With a Taste for Success, Wyckoff Teen Gives Back

Mackenzie Moore hopes to earn a third gold medal in June for her work with Skills USA

Despite the crushing pressure of being at one of the country's top schools, Mackenzie Moore makes it a priority to give back. Through a number of local initiatives — Relay for Life, the YMCA's Teen Leaders program, or Skills USA — the 15-year-old Wyckoff resident is focused on helping those in need. Mackenzie, a sophomore at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, was an avid devotee of cooking shows on TV and knew what she wanted to do when she was in middle school here in Wyckoff. "I wanted to see if I could make it in the kitchen," she said, so Begen County Academy's Culinary Arts and Hotel Administration program was a natural choice. "The program puts you in a kitchen, it was the perfect environment to put myself into — it's a microcosm…
