'The Music Man' Opens Saturday on Bergen County Players' Stage

Actors and actresses from around the county have helped make this production magical, says Director Larry Landsman.

It's opening night for the Bergen County Players' production of Meredith Willson's Tony Award winning play "The Music Man." "It's a beautiful production," said Director Larry Landsman, of Wyckoff. "There is no bigger undertaking than bringing "The Music Man," an American classic, to the stage." Saturday night's production is the culmination of four months of hard work, hundreds of hours of technical effort and plenty of dedication, Landsman said.  "This is the biggest show we've ever put on our stage, some folks were wondering if we could even do this show," Landsman said. "It's truly been a team effort." The cast includes actors from Oradell, Glen Rock, Westwood, Hillsdale, Fort Lee, New Milford, Wyckoff, Montclair and beyond. Ridgewood's…

At least three people were given medical attention at the scene of a two-car accident at the intersection of Godwin Avenue and Prospect Street.

Several people were injured following a car crash at the intersection of Godwin Avenue and Prospect Street in Midland Park Friday afternoon. At least three people were treated at the scene and boarded onto stretchers then into ambulances in the motor vehicle accident, which appeared to be a two car crash.  The extent of the injuries was not immediately clear. The accident occurred at approximately 2:25 p.m. and shut down traffic on the busy thoroughfare traveled by those commuting through Midland Park to nearby towns such as Ridgewood, Wyckoff, Glen Rock, and Waldwick.  The Midland Park Highland Avenue Elementary School is several hundred feet away on Highland Avenue.   Traffic was shut down on roads leading to the intersection for …

Scary! I am the owner of the jewelry / gift shop winnie & belle right there on Godwin Ave. I watch cars constantly speed and go left heading into traffic on Godwin trying to turn left on Highland Ave. It is very confusing how to turn left there. Wouldn't a conversion of rail to trail along the NY Susquehanna line be terrific. It would be a better use of the tax payer dollars than subsidizing NYSQ.   more ›

Residents Following Watering Rules, Utility Chief Says

Chronic violators will likely be receiving a letter letting them know Ridgewood Water is onto them, Director Frank Moritz said.

Resident compliance with Ridgewood Water restrictions has never been better than summer of 2012, according to utility director Frank Moritz. Stage II restrictions for ratepayers in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Wyckoff and Midland Park were declared July 10 after months of drought had depleted the tank levels to below 55 percent. The declaration stipulates that irrigations is prohibited on Mondays and residents must follow an odd-even scheduled for watering during the remainder of the week. In a conversation on Wednesday, Moritz said he can't remember a year in which residents were more cooperative. Thanks to rain and a largely cooperative public, water tanks are at about 80 percent capacity, Moritz said. A major step in messaging the public was …

PHOTOS: Hyped Thunderstorm All Bark, No Bite

Thankfully, hail storms were absent and 'damaging' winds were minimal as foreboding thunderstorms rolled through Bergen County Thursday evening. Add your photos to our gallery!

The forecast called for damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain and lightning, but outside of a little rain, a lot of thunder and a spectacular lightning show, there wasn't much damage to be found on Thursday night. PSE&G's outage map reported between 1-500 homes without power in the evening. Locally, only Midland Park and Ridgewood were seemingly affected by the minimal outages, according to the map. Hail? It thankfully never arrived, nor did the projected 58-70 mph winds. So while the storm didn't live up to the expectations, it did offer some great opportunities for photos. If you have a photo to share, please add! Tell us in the comments below how the thunderstorm affected your evening. Have a question or news tip? Contact editor Joseph…

Negotiations in Lawsuit Claiming Ridgewood Water Scammed Ratepayers for $3.3M Hit Dead End

Attorney Joseph Fiorenzo says Ridgewood Water illegally reapportioned water utility monies for village operations.

Negotiations to resolve a $3 million class action lawsuit filed by Wyckoff, Glen Rock and Midland Park alleging Ridgewood Water has bilked ratepayers out of millions, have stalled. Attorney Joseph Fiorenzo claims in the law suit filed in Superior Court in Bergen County that the Village of Ridgewood has "been engaged in sham accounting to artificially inflate the costs of the Water Utility and decrease the expenses of the village." The Hackensack-based attorney is accusing Ridgewood of falsely claiming that a 21 percent rate increase in 2010 and a 5 percent increase in 2011 were justified by an operating loss of more than $1 million in 2009-10. "Evidence revealed... that there was no 'loss' to justify the extraordinary water rate increase…

I wish to take a moment to correct some of my previous comments on this posting and the other from this morning. As far as refunds/credits I was wrong. The money would never come to the towns. It would come to the rate payers. Research and investigation of the subject confirms this. The Court would deceide the actual flow and methods. So no funds would go to the towns, except, any legal costs …   more ›

Local Fire Departments Stage Drill at Midland Park Lumber Yard [Photos]

Traffic was affected in Midland Park Sunday morning

Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Ridgewood and Fair Lawn fire departments were among a number of local emergency responders participating in a live fire drill in Midland Park Sunday morning. Kuiken Brothers Lumber Yard on Lake Avenue between Goffle Road and Cottage Street billowed in smoke while numerous fire departments stretched hoses and sprayed water from atop a number of sky-high fire apparatuses. A smoke machine in a shed simulated the fire in the lumber yard, said Ridgewood Fire Chief Jim Van Goor said.  Midland Park, Oakland, Ho-Ho-Kus and Hawthorne's Fire Departments were also on scene Sunday morning. A big thanks to Wyckoff-Franklin Lakes Patch reader Jon Unglert, who was on the scene snapping photos.

Ex-Bergen Financing Chief Sentenced to 2 Years for Mortgage Fraud Scheme

Ronald J. O’Malley used official office to help his Ridgewood-based firm.

Former Bergen County Improvement Authority chairman Ronald J. O’Malley was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday for a mortgage fraud scheme that falsely claimed mortgage borrowers worked at the county’s public financing agency, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said.   O’Malley, 48, a principal in Ridgewood-based mortgage brokerage firm Diversified Financial Group, was also hit with a $25,000 fine imposed by U.S. District Judge Dennis M. Cavanaugh. O’Malley and his coconspirators arranged for phony paystubs and W-2 forms to show borrowers worked at the BCIA, federal prosecutors said. O’Malley and others also arranged for agency staff to confirm the bogus information to banks and lenders calling to confirm the information. Former Diversified …

There are more and more politicians doing things like this then we think. They just have not been caught yet. If Christie wants to save money for the people investigate these so called elected people and put them away. All the money they scam should go to the taxes in that town when they get busted. Christie likes to make examples of people well start with your own.   more ›
