Wyckoff Ponders Children's Safety in Wake of Newtown School Shooting

While some parents are calling for stricter procedures to protect their children and others say current measures are sufficient, officials are say they are exercising prudence.

Wyckoff Public School officials and board members, parents, and township officials gathered at a public meeting Monday night to discuss school safety, just three days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Superintendent Richard Kuder reviewed the schools' safety protocol, including twice monthly emergency drills at every school and the implementation of a buzzer system that screens those looking to make entry into school buildings. Kuder didn't rule out future changes to security here, but suggested administrators would look for ways to improve. “We will continue to look for ways to upgrade the system if that’s possible," he said to the assembled crowd at Eisenhower Middle School. "There are things the principals and I have …

Amazing, make a statement that you want to protect the children at school and people start making statements like "armed guards on school doors." I had to go back and look at my original post and see if I said that. Place armed guards at the doors, the media will cover it and a sick person who wants to harm people is smart enough to enter someplace else. These acts are not random and a very well …   more ›

Wyckoff Students Back to School Wednesday

Despite lingering outages at two township schools, students will return to classes

Wyckoff students would finally be returning to classes on Wednesday, according to District Superintendent Richard Kuder. Elementary student would have split sessions at the two elementary schools that have power, and Eisenhower Middle School students would have a full day of classes at their home school of Eisenhower. AT WASHINGTON: AT LINCOLN: District officials waited to see if power would be restored at Coolidge, so parents had to wait too — until approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday — to find out if kids would return to classes. "We're hoping that we're moving towards normalcy," Kuder said. "There are no perfect solutions here." From a district notification to parents: "Eisenhower Middle School will operate on its normal starting and ending …

Iasiello Takes the Reins at Eisenhower with Focus on Technology

Iasiello: “Today’s education must include the study of cultural influences, political movements, the economy and why it collapsed — how we got here and where we are going."

The new principal at Eisenhower Middle School says lighting a fire in the minds of children at a young, impressionable age is his passion. “My goal is to get kids to discover what they love about learning, to get excited, and to become self-motivated, life-long learners,” said Chris Iasiello, 34. “I really love my job.”  Iasiello was officially announced as the middle school principal on Monday night. His predecessor Stephen Raimo recently accepted a promotion as the director of research, planning, curriculum and evaluation in the district. Iasiello, a Waldwick resident, is a former social studies teacher at Paramus and Fair Lawn high schools. He said he brings the perspective of what middle school students need to be prepared for their …

As an EMS parent with 2 children in the school, I'm in total agreement that the additional administrative position does not seem necessary. While I liked Raimo and have seen positive results in the school, I don't feel we need additional administration. Iasiello seems like a nice enough person (although my kids say he was "mean to the 7th & 8th graders") and I'll give him time to see how he …   more ›

Wyckoff Pulling Out Of School Lunch Program

Wyckoff to abandon Nation School Lunch Programs subsidies to "provide consistent, healthy lunches in a bright, pleasant atmosphere." The board also plans a nearly $172,000 renovation to improve the cafeteria at Eisenhower School. And paninis.

The Wyckoff Board of Education is pulling out of the National School Lunch Program — foregoing thousands of dollars in subsidies — in its efforts to provide a healthier lunch at a reasonable cost, according to school officials. “We think we can do a better job at a fair cost,” said Wyckoff Public School Superintendent Rich Kuder. “The only thing that might be affected is the cost of milk, which may go up ten to twenty cents.” The board is also in the process of getting started on a $171,880 renovation plan to improve the cafeteria at Eisenhower. The plans call for such changes as a new panini station and a redesign to boost efficiency of student traffic at lunch time. But as for post-NSLP plans going forward, students can expect reasonable…

Extended Day Kindergarten to Debut in September

Wyckoff Board of Ed also voted to move elections

The Wyckoff Board of Education unanimously approved the creation of an extended kindergarten program for the 2012-2013 school year and moved school elections to November at Monday night’s meeting. The kindergarten program is modeled after the current Franklin Lakes public schools kindergarten program which operates on an A/B schedule. “We felt this model helps us achieve state standards as well as honors parents who want to spend time one on one time with their 5 year olds,” said Wyckoff School District Superintendent Richard Kuder. Students who are assigned to A group will participate in full day classes on Monday and Tuesday. Group B students will attend day classes on Thursday and Friday. Both groups will attend a full day of school on …

This is the best opportunity for kindergarten kids. It offers them the best transition into full day 1st grade. Majority of kids come out of prek with more hours of instruction than they do when entering kindergarten.... Yes they will benefit and as the standards increase in 1st - 5th grade..we will now be starting them witht he proper social and academic base that is needed.   more ›
