The biology teacher, who will be retiring at the end of the school year, received the 2013 Bergen County Teacher Award for Ramapo High School.
After 22 years teaching at Ramapo High School, John McCormick is leaving on a high note. The biology teacher won the Bergen County Teacher Award for RHS, given annually to one teacher at each county school. “I think because over the years I’ve developed a reputation for being tough,” McCormick said when asked why he thought he had received the recognition. “But at the same time, kids come in to the class and learn about biology and have a lot of fun doing it.” McCormick, who will retire at the end of this year, taught two sections of advanced placement biology—almost 50 students who could go on to earn college credit for the coursework they’ve completed in his class. After he leaves full-time teaching in June, McCormick will be working …

We are completely energized right now with so much happiness.” The Gold Masque drama program presented “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” on Thursday evening. The show is a musical comedy that is known for the way it engages the audience and even involves them. “At first I was a little conscientious about this kind of show. Neither school ranked in the top 100 in the nation or in the top 50 in the state. When compared to their neighbors in Ridgewood the Ramapo-Indian Hills School District presents numbers that can't help but underwhelm. Despite having more students and the highest student/teacher ratio of the three schools, the numbers from Ridgewood are undeniably stronger in certain areas. 68 percent of Ridgewood students are involved with the advanced placement program. That is 20 percent higher than Ramapo and more than 30 percent higher than Indian Hills. Ridgewood is ranked 188 in …

"If you want to get in a kid's face and read him the riot act just make sure you have your arm around him when you’re walking off the practice field," said Ramapo A.D. Ron Anello, in a conversation about the right and wrong way to coach young athletes.
Last week the New Jersey residents were reminded that things aren’t always, as they seem. Rutgers men’s basketball coach Mike Rice was terminated after a video highlighting his abusive and foul antics surfaced. The resulting chain of events began Rice’s termination, his assistant’s resignation and subsequently, Wyckoff native and Oakland resident Tim Pernetti was obligated to resign. Even the President of the University has been under scrutiny for the handling of this situation. “I’m an old guy and I played back in the old days where coaches would get away with things and that’s just the way it was,” said Ramapo High School Athletic Director Ron Anello. “But what I saw on tape was beyond any of those methods.” Anello went on to discuss his…

Good quality theater is possible with young people. I've seen it. But it takes more than tossing together a gaggle of popular kids and director's pets, applying make up, and encouraging them to ham it up. It's incumbent upon a director to look for talented and expressive youngsters that might be off the radar, teach them the craft, and cultivate honest relationships between actors and their …   more ›
