By Tom Johnson, NJSpotlight.com Is it time to invest nearly $4 billion in ratepayer subsidies to help modernize the power grid to avert widespread outages from extreme weather, such as Hurricane Sandy? If the state’s largest utility gets its way, the answer is "Yes," at least according to a filing yesterday with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. The proposal -- courtesy of Public Service Electric & Gas -- is likely to kindle a fiery debate over how the state should respond to Sandy and at what cost to consumers. The filing comes at a time when the state’s utilities are under enormous pressure to reduce long outages caused by extreme weather, while the Christie administration is struggling to find ways to reduce energy bills, which …

Township officials announced at a public meeting Tuesday night that PSEG utility work will stymie traffic in the township throughout much of August — first on a half-mile stretch of Cedar Hill Avenue then on Ravine Avenue. The utility company, which has been replacing gas lines throughout Wyckoff over the summer, has advised the township that through August 17 Cedar Hill Avenue between Wyckoff Avenue and Newtown Road would be closed. Commuters traveling on Cedar Hill Avenue should expect delays. The work is expected to take place 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. When crews there are finished, PSEG will dig in at Ravine Avenue between Grandview and Lafayette avenues, closing traffic there to all except homeowners who will …

Police warn commuters to stay away from busy intersection, which will be completely closed due to utility work Tuesday. The closure may extend to Wednesday and is likely to cause residual delays in downtown Wyckoff.
Utility work at a busy downtown Wyckoff intersection is to cause severe traffic problems that may back up to other parts of the township, police said Monday. PSEG and road crews were tearing up a trench in the street on the east side of Wyckoff Avenue between Franklin Avenue and Frances Place Monday morning, forcing Wyckoff Police to narrow traffic down to one lane. Detective Sgt. Joseph Soto was on scene directing alternating cars down the highly trafficked road, which was shut down to through traffic at Franklin Avenue. According to Soto the road crews would be moving up toward Franklin Avenue throughout the day, culminating with at least one full day of work Tuesday at the busy intersection. "You've got nine lanes of traffic that all …

This feels like the bank bailout – corporate mismanagement covered at public expense. These companies have been saving money by ignoring much needed preventative maintenance. Now, after years of this type of shortsightedness, they come with their hand out to the ratepayers asking us to bail them out or suffer the consequences of not doing so.   more ›
