As Recreation Sports Enrollment Falls, Towns Explore Shared Services

A recent drop in enrollment points to the popularity of emerging sports such as lacrosse

Recreation baseball and softball enrollment has dipped varying degrees in both Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes. But that doesn’t necessarily mean children are forsaking sports — quite the contrary. “[Children] could be playing three or four sports any given month,” said Wyckoff Recreation Director Andy Wingfield. “And some do.” With the addition of spring lacrosse two years ago in Wyckoff and the extension of club soccer into spring, many active youngsters are finding they don’t have time for America’s favorite pastime. @ SK -- what makes you qualified to assess a rec program's operational effectiveness, organization and the quality of work done by volunteer coaches? I beg to differ - I have found the rec office to be responsive, courteous and well run. FLOW-area Shared Service Agreement Helps Curb Rec Spending

Contracts awarded to 11 vendors saves money due to towns' large purchasing power

The Wyckoff Township Committee passed a resolution Tuesday awarding 11 vendors with contracts for recreational equipment to be purchased for recreation departments in Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes and Oakland. The contracts include nearly 200 items such as first aid kits, trophies and team uniforms. Wyckoff served as the lead agency, securing volume pricing by pooling the purchasing power of united FLOW-area. This is the fifth year the towns have obtained such pricing through collaborative bidding. All contracts were awarded to vendors with the lowest individual unit price on all the items.
