The following letter was submitted by Wyckoff resident Grant Schwab. The following is a note to Ramapo-Indian Hills district parents, students, taxpayers, and whomever else this may concern. My name is Grant Schwab. I am currently a senior at Ramapo High School. In the coming months, I shall be preparing to leave for college, but before I leave the education system, I feel it appropriate to address two arising issues in the district. To start, I have nothing but the utmost respect for all Ramapo High School faculty and administrators. However, I believe that two major reforms potentially reaching both Ramapo and Indian Hills high schools in the coming years may be detrimental to the integrity of our education system. The two possibly …

To the Editor: I am in receipt of the Franklin Lakes calendar. I question how much town money and/or time went in to this project. I know that in the past, former Mayor DeNicola made a thoughtful decision to stop the calendar because it was time consuming and not self-sustaining. Have these issues been successfully resolved? The calendar does not show Franklin Lakes at its best. The editing of this unnecessary piece repeated two pictures. There weren’t enough good photographs to actually choose 12 good ones? What does that say of Franklin Lakes? The pictures were solicited in a year-long contest. Greg Hart was one of the judges. Two pictures are attributed to Greg Hart, our Borough Administrator, and judge. Locations were …

Dear Red Cross, Thank you for protecting us during Hurricane Sandy. Your shelters helped save so many families. If it wasn't for you a lot of people would be injured. You really helped people after this storm and are still continuing to help. I admire you for that and look forward to helping more as I get older. You are all my hero. I look up to you and what you do to help our nation. I can not thank you enough for all you do to help families in their time of need. Sincerely, Brianna Foster 5th grade, Woodside Avenue Elementary School Have a question or news tip? Contact editor Joseph M. Gerace at Joseph.Gerace@patch.com, or find us on Facebook and Twitter. Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to proclaim my support for Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen as candidates for the office of Wyckoff Township Committee. I was fortunate to meet Haakon at the Saint Elizabeth's Men's Cornerstone Retreat in the spring of 2011. Since then, I have become close friends with Haakon and his family. I have a great deal of respect for the enthusiasm and passion Haakon shows in the activities he undertakes. Haakon has a very positive attitude and is always seeking new ways to make things better. During the last year, I have seen Haakon take on leadership roles in both the church and community. He takes a great deal of pride in his community and is always striving to help the community grow. Haakon is …

To The Editor: The political machinery of both parties has over complicated what should be a fairly logical choice. Our Nation is sick. We have overspent our way into a $16 trillion hole; $53,000 of debt per person, up from $30,000 per American in 2008. Policies sold as short-term stimulus are the new normal. The average American has sacrificed to reduce their personal debt while politicians ran up another $23,000 in per capita debt on a China Bank credit card. President Obama would like us to believe that the solution is to raise taxes on the vilified wealthy. This is a group largely composed of small business owners, the only reliable job creators. While many would be willing to entertain this idea as part of a comprehensive cost …

Dear Editor: The Wyckoff Y is hosting a unique program on breast cancer perspectives on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Lake House from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. A panel of those affected by breast cancer will present their stories and open the discussion to the audience. Brooke Laster, an oncology social worker from Valley Hospital, will moderate. I have lived in Wyckoff for over 26 years and am proud to be a member of the panel, speaking about my stage IV metastatic diagnosis and what it's like to be living with metastatic breast cancer after 17 years of being cancer free. In addition, the audience will hear the very different perspectives of a young woman, an early stage survivor and a caregiver. October becomes a pink haze for many of us. I urge …

Dear Editor Gerace: I am writing to express my support for Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen for Wyckoff Township Committee. I have the pleasure of knowing Kevin Rooney and his family for a number of years. He is a tireless public servant who spends untold hours in and around town giving his time and expertise to everything from shade tree preservation to finance, to public safety. He is an unsung hero who does more behind the scenes for Wyckoff than anyone I know. He is a constant wellspring of ideas to make Wyckoff a better place than it already is. On a personal note, I know Kevin to be a good and loyal friend, and a great family man to his wife Hayley and their four children. Haakon Jepsen represents the next generation of public …

To the Editor: Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen are the 2 Republican candidates for Wyckoff Township Committee who bring a positive and constructive approach with independent thinking! Since being elected in 2009, we have witnessed Kevin’s tireless efforts and care of all neighbors in Wyckoff, especially during the storms in 2010 and last year in the aftermath of Irene and the Halloween snow. Kevin pitched in and worked through the night and weekend with our DPW and emergency responders. Last fall, he coordinated the removal of all the downed tree limb throughout town. As finance chair, he is focused on doing more with less and championed an austere budget with less than a 1% increase ($33 to the average homeowner). His leadership is …

To the Editor: What can we say? Wow, what a weekend for our family the Buddy Walk and The TD for Billy. What a town and community! What a life lesson for our kids and the community. That is the gift of Billy. He came to us for a reason. Because of him, we have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people and got to experience so many inspiring moments. Because of him, our family has been supported and embraced by the community. A special thanks to: Andy Wingfield, Keith Woetzel, Richie Ray, John Amodeo, Mark Hess, Frank Brantley, Roger Schnorrbusch, Jeff Kreagan and Dean Vellis for planting the seed, taking Billy under their wing and making this happen. The Coaches: Bags, Duffus, Grusser, Mirch. Billy's teammates and their parents…

To the Editor: On November 6, the people of Franklin Lakes will cast their vote for the K-8 Board of Education. As a current trustee on the Board, I feel all the candidates deserve our gratitude for the time and dedication they have put forth and intend to, yet one candidate will surely have my vote. Shirley Hermansen O’Reilly has all the qualifications that make her the best candidate. She has four children who have gone through, or are still a part of, the Franklin Lakes School District. Having a daughter who recently graduated college, Shirley understands the academic challenges that lie ahead and she has a clear vision for the types of programs that our children need in order to ensure a successful high school career and beyond. …

Psychological studies have shown that peak focus can only be maintained for 40 - 45 minutes. I would add "especially after lunch". As to laptops for each student, this seems like a fad inspired by Apple (because you just KNOW that they will be Apples) to get more lifetime users despite their higher cost. And several hundred computers per year will require an entire IT department that does nothing…   more ›
