RIH Appoints New Interim Superintendent

Dr. Ernest Palestis, currently the interim superintendent of the Morris Plains district, will begin his tenure at RIH in late August.

The Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education announced the appointment of an interim superintendent at its public meeting Monday night, approving a one-year contract with Dr. Ernest Palestis to head regional high school district. Palestis, currently the interim superintendent of the Morris Plains school district, will begin his tenure at RIH Aug. 27. Until then, the board announced, current curriculum director Beverly MacKay will serve as interim superintendent. Palestis’ combined 24 years of experience as a superintendent, in the Morris Plains district and previously as the superintendent of the Mine Hill and Wharton districts in Morris County, has included overseeing regional districts. Schoen Will Earn $167,500 in Mahwah Post

The outgoing Ramapo-Indian Hills superintendent's new contract will likely also include a 15 percent merit-based pay raise, according to one Mahwah school official.

Officials at a Mahwah Board of Education meeting Wednesday made official the lateral move of Superintendent Lauren Schoen from the Ramapo-Indian Hills School District to the Mahwah K-8 district. The board approved a five-year contract for Schoen starting in July, which district business administrator Ed Deptula said will pay the most the district legally can. “We are prepared to offer the maximum amount allowed [under the state’s superintendent salary cap], which is $167,500,” he said Wednesday. The contract is likely to also include a 15 percent merit-based pay raise, Deptula said. Beloved Teacher Saved Following Public Outcry at RIH

"I am deeply moved," said Ed Haddad, a music teacher who was likely to lose his job before the community came to his aid.

A crowd of nearly 200 parents and students attended the Ramapo-Indian Hills Board of Education meeting Monday night to petition trustees to spare beloved music teacher, Ed Haddad. The first rumors began to circulate among staff and students last week that Haddad’s contract would not be renewed for the 2012-2013 school year. Haddad, a music teacher at Ramapo and Indian Hills, had replaced Kevin DeFreest two years ago when DeFreest retired.  Speaking to a number of students and parents over the past several days, it was generally held that in Haddad’s short time at Ramapo, the quality of music — both in vocal and orchestral performances — had improved dramatically.
