As Recreation Sports Enrollment Falls, Towns Explore Shared Services

A recent drop in enrollment points to the popularity of emerging sports such as lacrosse

Recreation baseball and softball enrollment has dipped varying degrees in both Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes. But that doesn’t necessarily mean children are forsaking sports — quite the contrary. “[Children] could be playing three or four sports any given month,” said Wyckoff Recreation Director Andy Wingfield. “And some do.” With the addition of spring lacrosse two years ago in Wyckoff and the extension of club soccer into spring, many active youngsters are finding they don’t have time for America’s favorite pastime. In Franklin Lakes, only nine seventh and eighth graders signed up for spring rec softball. “There are also a lot of other activities for kids to get involved in — the Wyckoff Family YMCA Sharks Swim Team has a very strong …

@ SK -- what makes you qualified to assess a rec program's operational effectiveness, organization and the quality of work done by volunteer coaches? I beg to differ - I have found the rec office to be responsive, courteous and well run. The coaches have varying degrees of competence, but all in all, the volunteer coaches in town are good people who try to do a good job. Of course, being …   more ›

Don Bosco Lacrosse Trio Headed for College Rivalry

Wyckoff residents have signed to play with Boston University, U.S. Naval Academy and Lafayette College.

Last Thursday's national signing day at Don Bosco Prep was a very big event for a trio of Wyckoff natives about to be sent off in very different directions.  Brady Wulster, Jack Ray, Nicholas Buchanan, products of the Wyckoff Recreation Lacrosse Program, started playing lacrosse together in the third grade and each have selected colleges in the Patriot League and will now spend the next few years playing against each other.  Wulster will attend Boston University, Ray will attend The United States Naval Academy and Nicholas Buchanan will attend Lafayette College. “To see these young men start the next phase of their lacrosse careers is so well-deserved and a true testament to the quality of the Wyckoff Lacrosse Program, of which, these boys…

Tribe Lacrosse is Sticking It to the Competition

Local lacrosse teams will be holding tryouts for the upcoming season on Oct. 21

Sure, when the leaves begin to brown then fall in the crisp autumn air, the sport we think about most — and spend loads of TV time watching — is football. There’s another sport starting to pick up steam, however, and this one is just as grueling. What’s more, it’s taken off in the FLOW area. We’re talking lacrosse here and it’s about time to grab your sticks and string those pockets. Tryouts for the summer 2013 Tribe Lacrosse team are just around the corner and, while the program is still very new, they’ve already had a blossoming interest and even some on-field success. “This is year two of our program, and we have over 60 kids participating, with about 3 to 4 teams,” said Pat O’Hagan, sports director at the Wyckoff YMCA. The tryouts will…

Tribe Lacrosse Tops Tournaments at Every Level

All three teams in the new "elite-level program" won competitions

The information below was submitted by the Wyckoff YMCA: In its first season of competition, Tribe Lacrosse, an elite summer lacrosse club founded by long-time Wyckoff coaches Jeff Eischen and Sal Sassano won a championship in each of their three grade levels. The 5th Grade Boys team led off with a championship win at the Sweet Laxin’ Tournament in Bridgewater and both the 6th and 7th/8th Grade teams took home the championship at the Jersey Shoot Out in Metuchen which attracts many of the East Coast’s elite level teams including top teams from Long Island, Maryland and Massachusetts. “We set out to develop an elite level program that would build upon the strong foundation established by both the Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes Recreation …

With a Taste for Success, Wyckoff Teen Gives Back

Mackenzie Moore hopes to earn a third gold medal in June for her work with Skills USA

Despite the crushing pressure of being at one of the country's top schools, Mackenzie Moore makes it a priority to give back. Through a number of local initiatives — Relay for Life, the YMCA's Teen Leaders program, or Skills USA — the 15-year-old Wyckoff resident is focused on helping those in need. Mackenzie, a sophomore at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, was an avid devotee of cooking shows on TV and knew what she wanted to do when she was in middle school here in Wyckoff. "I wanted to see if I could make it in the kitchen," she said, so Begen County Academy's Culinary Arts and Hotel Administration program was a natural choice. "The program puts you in a kitchen, it was the perfect environment to put myself into — it's a microcosm…
