Wyckoff Township Municipal Taxes Expected to Increase by $34 Per Household

The Township Committee presented a proposed 2013 budget of $17,775,278 — an increase of 3.02 percent over 2012.

The Wyckoff Township Committee introduced a budget Wednesday afternoon that would raise municipal taxes on the average home by only $34.92. “I’d like to come in at a $0 increase but when we include all of the unfunded mandates it comes in around the mid-low $30 range,” said Committeeman Kevin Rooney. “For us this really is a flat budget. We are not enhancing anything. In fact, we cut back in some ways. The $34 range is flat when you add in the state mandated increases. The total proposed 2013 municipal budget is $17,775,278, an increase of 3.02 percent over the 2012 budget. The Library returned $388,070 in unused funds, which were used to limit the tax levy. “I think the budget committee did a great job in preparing the budget and have …

Township Mulls Pay-to-Play Grass Collection

Wyckoff committeemen say residents have written to town hall complaining about the suspension of town-wide grass clipping removal.

The Wyckoff Township Committee is considering giving residents here an option to pay for curbside removal of grass clippings less than a dozen weeks after the governing body elected to excise the costly service that only 15 percent of citizens were using.  Committeeman Brian Scanlan initiated a discussion with his fellow committeemen at a public meeting Tuesday night, spurred on by notes from several residents displeased with the committee's decision last year. Scanlan's proposal was to gauge interest in a pay-to-play program in which residents ponied up $150 to cover the cost for the township's existing garbage disposal company to cart away grass clippings and then dispose of them. Township officials estimate that cost will be …

Rooney Wins 'Chopped' Crown

Former mayor says he'll donate his $10,000 prize to charity.

In a televised battle for culinary supremacy, Wyckoff Committeeman Kevin Rooney took home the "Chopped" crown Sunday night on The Food Network. Rooney went head-to-head with three other chefs, creating a "sophisticated" sushi dish, ostrich fan fillets with purple asparagus and a tube of roe in a blueberry wine sauce, and a "sweet and savory" French toast, according to a report on northjersey.com. "I've always loved to cook and my children like to brag about how good my cooking is," Rooney told the website prior to the show airing. The former mayor took part in the amateur competition — "Chopped" typically pits professional chefs against one another — more than a year ago. His daughter Jordan entered him into the running.  Rooney won $10,…

For all we know maybe Kevin did have something in mind. I believe that this would be a private matter and those of us in the public just don't need an answer. Something are just private and should remain that way. I will say this - knowing Kevin, as I do as a friend. I am positive that it went where it could do the most good for the most people. That is his heart. That said, we should not bother …   more ›

Mayor Again, Boonstra Seeks to Improve Quality of Life in Wyckoff

"I love this town... I'm humbled that you have chosen me as your chairman and as such, your mayor for 2013."

Wyckoff welcomed a familiar face to lead its governing body at the township's annual reorganization meeting on Tuesday. The annual New Year's Day event is the public's first face-to-face look at the new make up of the committee, as well as the governing body's opportunity to appoint board members and select a new mayor and deputy mayor. Rudy Boonstra was selected as the township's leader, and Doug Christie was selected as deputy mayor. "It is my distinct honor to have Mr. Boonstra serve as the mayor for 2013," said Committeeman Kevin Rooney, before Boonstra was given unanimous approval by the committee. "I love this town," Boonstra said following his selection. "I'm humbled that you have chosen me as your chairman and as such, your mayor …

Wow, this one has really become a tinderbox. Hi Linda C & Ed ! Well, at the risk of getting my head chopped off - Mr. Boonstra and I grew up together. With that said and with the knowledge I am pleased that Rudy is once again Mayor. He has a historical view of Wyckoff that I believe is important to Town governance. He has been instrumental in "buying up" as much vacant property as possible, for …   more ›

In Farewell Address, Mayor DePhillips Lists Top 10 Achievements

At the close of his 3-year term on the township's governing body, the former mayor catalogs the achievements of the committee in 2012.

Chris DePhillips, who served as Wyckoff's mayor during his final year on the committee, gave his farewell address before Wyckoff's 2013 reorganization meeting Tuesday. Calling 2012 "another eventful year," DePhillips said the committee faced "multiple challenges" but focused instead on what the township's governing body was able to accomplish by "working well together in a collaborative manner focused, as always, on achieving consensus. "At the end of each calendar year, the national, state and local media have a habit of printing their favorite top 10 stories, well I'm going to publish what I believe to be the top 10 achievements of the committee this year." The committee, he said, strove to serve the best interest of the community as a …

Rooney, Jepsen Thank Supporters

Send your letters to Joseph.Gerace@patch.com

Dear Neighbors, We are humbled by the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from all corners of town. We deeply appreciate the trust that the people of Wyckoff have placed in us, and we look forward to serving as your representatives on the Township Committee. Our special thanks go to the campaign volunteers who contributed so much; your dedication never wavered.  That same spirit of commitment is on full display in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. So many of you have pitched in to make sure that those in greatest need were cared for, both locally and throughout the state. Wyckoff's strength is an inspiration to us. Together, we will overcome this challenge and any future challenges. Gratefully, Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen…

Letter to the Editor: Rooney Instrumental in Keeping Tax Flat

Send your letters to joseph.gerace@patch.com

Dear Mr. Editor: Please accept this letter of support for the team of Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen for Wyckoff Township Committee. I have come to know Kevin over the past 18 months; during that time I have found him to be one of the most honorable men and hardest working Committeemen I have known. He has spent countless hours, on behalf of all Wyckoff residents. Kevin spent countless days working for Wyckoff during the Oct. 31, 2011, storm, helping each department, as Mayor, as well as keeping our residents updated. As Finance Chairman, Kevin has been instrumental in keeping the Wyckoff tax rate flat.  Always his thoughts are what is right for Wyckoff, and how can we afford it without burdening our taxpayers. Kevin looks at each issue, …

Letter to the Editor: Values, Dedication Define Rooney

Send your letters to joseph.gerace@patch.com

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing today to show my support and encourage the Wyckoff residents to support the efficient and committed efforts of Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen on November 6, 2012 for Township Committee. I have come to know Kevin, very well, over the years and can truly say he has exceptional moral values, family values and a dedicated work ethic. Kevin is devoted to everything he does and also has a logical thought process when doing so. Over the last three years he has put all his effort into making Wyckoff run better and more cost effective for the residents. Kevin is always there to volunteer his time for the community before doing something for himself. Last year as Mayor two big storms hit. Kevin was out in the …

Letter to the Editor: Rooney, Jepsen 'Exactly What Wyckoff Needs'

Send your letters to joseph.gerace@patch.com

Dear Editor Gerace: I am writing to express my support for Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen for Wyckoff Township Committee. I have the pleasure of knowing Kevin Rooney and his family for a number of years. He is a tireless public servant who spends untold hours in and around town giving his time and expertise to everything from shade tree preservation to finance, to public safety.  He is an unsung hero who does more behind the scenes for Wyckoff than anyone I know.  He is a constant wellspring of ideas to make Wyckoff a better place than it already is.  On a personal note, I know Kevin to be a good and loyal friend, and a great family man to his wife Hayley and their four children. Haakon Jepsen represents the next generation of public …
