The Wyckoff Township Committee is considering giving residents here an option to pay for curbside removal of grass clippings less than a dozen weeks after the governing body elected to excise the costly service that only 15 percent of citizens were using. Committeeman Brian Scanlan initiated a discussion with his fellow committeemen at a public meeting Tuesday night, spurred on by notes from several residents displeased with the committee's decision last year. Scanlan's proposal was to gauge interest in a pay-to-play program in which residents ponied up $150 to cover the cost for the township's existing garbage disposal company to cart away grass clippings and then dispose of them. Township officials estimate that cost will be …

Initiative spearheaded by the Blue Star Moms was approved by a 4-1 vote Tuesday
The Wyckoff Township Committee Tuesday approved a resolution allowing a new flag to be flown honoring fallen military personnel. The Blue Star Moms presented the flag to the governing body at the Feb. 5 public meeting where the committee passed a resolution by a vote of 4-1. “There has never been an officially recognized symbol that reminds us daily of the sacrifices made by members of our military who lost their lives in service to our country,” said Wyckoff Mayor Rudy Boonstra. The flag recognizes all individuals who died in the U.S. military, from the founding of the nation to today. “Remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and their families,” said local Blue Star Moms chapter President Marjorie Sietsma. While the resolution …
Wyckoff’s three fire companies prepping for rigorous exercise
On March 1, the three fire companies in Wyckoff are set to compete in the Annual Firefighter Inspection Contest. This 54-year tradition is alive and well. “It’s really been an evolution,” said volunteer firefighter and Committeeman Doug Christie. “Before we used to just dust off the equipment; now we run through scenarios. It’s all about firefighting awareness.” The township’s volunteer firefighters spend weeks beforehand dismantling, cleaning and repairing fire pumpers, trucks and equipment. They also hone their firefighting knowledge to prepare for the annual inspection, which includes oral quizzing and scenario run-throughs. A panel of seven independent fire fighting experts will judge them. Wyckoff Town Administrator Bob Shannon, also …

Dear Neighbors, We are humbled by the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from all corners of town. We deeply appreciate the trust that the people of Wyckoff have placed in us, and we look forward to serving as your representatives on the Township Committee. Our special thanks go to the campaign volunteers who contributed so much; your dedication never wavered. That same spirit of commitment is on full display in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. So many of you have pitched in to make sure that those in greatest need were cared for, both locally and throughout the state. Wyckoff's strength is an inspiration to us. Together, we will overcome this challenge and any future challenges. Gratefully, Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen…

Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to proclaim my support for Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen as candidates for the office of Wyckoff Township Committee. I was fortunate to meet Haakon at the Saint Elizabeth's Men's Cornerstone Retreat in the spring of 2011. Since then, I have become close friends with Haakon and his family. I have a great deal of respect for the enthusiasm and passion Haakon shows in the activities he undertakes. Haakon has a very positive attitude and is always seeking new ways to make things better. During the last year, I have seen Haakon take on leadership roles in both the church and community. He takes a great deal of pride in his community and is always striving to help the community grow. Haakon is …

Read what family man, senior analyst, zoning board alternate and Wyckoff Township Committee Candidate Haakon Jepsen had to say in this one-on-one interview.
When Haakon Jepsen switched careers a decade ago he likely wouldn't have been able to guess that the skills he'd develop at his new job — and some that he brought there with him — would be pivotal tools as he set out to earn a spot on the Wyckoff Township Committee. But as the hours wind down until Election Day, Wyckoff residents will have to decide if the actor-turned-analyst who now finds himself locked in a race for one of a pair of seats on the township's governing body has what it takes. His father a former Washington D.C. cop and his mother a now-retired Maryland public school teacher, Jepsen was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Crofton in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He called the planned community of Crofton a "great place…

Dear Mr. Editor: Please accept this letter of support for the team of Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen for Wyckoff Township Committee. I have come to know Kevin over the past 18 months; during that time I have found him to be one of the most honorable men and hardest working Committeemen I have known. He has spent countless hours, on behalf of all Wyckoff residents. Kevin spent countless days working for Wyckoff during the Oct. 31, 2011, storm, helping each department, as Mayor, as well as keeping our residents updated. As Finance Chairman, Kevin has been instrumental in keeping the Wyckoff tax rate flat. Always his thoughts are what is right for Wyckoff, and how can we afford it without burdening our taxpayers. Kevin looks at each issue, …

To Whom It May Concern: I am writing today to show my support and encourage the Wyckoff residents to support the efficient and committed efforts of Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen on November 6, 2012 for Township Committee. I have come to know Kevin, very well, over the years and can truly say he has exceptional moral values, family values and a dedicated work ethic. Kevin is devoted to everything he does and also has a logical thought process when doing so. Over the last three years he has put all his effort into making Wyckoff run better and more cost effective for the residents. Kevin is always there to volunteer his time for the community before doing something for himself. Last year as Mayor two big storms hit. Kevin was out in the …

Dear Editor Gerace: I am writing to express my support for Kevin Rooney and Haakon Jepsen for Wyckoff Township Committee. I have the pleasure of knowing Kevin Rooney and his family for a number of years. He is a tireless public servant who spends untold hours in and around town giving his time and expertise to everything from shade tree preservation to finance, to public safety. He is an unsung hero who does more behind the scenes for Wyckoff than anyone I know. He is a constant wellspring of ideas to make Wyckoff a better place than it already is. On a personal note, I know Kevin to be a good and loyal friend, and a great family man to his wife Hayley and their four children. Haakon Jepsen represents the next generation of public …
