A Dakota Trail home suffered minimal damage to its first floor joist after lint caught fire inside a dryer vent pipe Sunday morning.
Fire departments from eight towns were dispatched to a Franklin Lakes home Sunday morning to fight a fire that started in a dryer's vent pipe. Franklin Lakes Fire Chief Denny Knubel said a build up of highly combustible lint caught fire inside the pipe, which runs from the first floor into the basement and out the front of the Dakota Trail home. Although the fire spread along the pipe's path, it stayed largely contained to the the 18-inch space between the dryer room floorboards and the basement entertainment room ceiling directly below it. The basement and its equipment escaped unscathed and the floor joist suffered only minimal damage, Knubel said. "Just trying to get to the fire was the toughest part," he said, noting firefighters had …

Hundreds of residences are uninhabitable and over 80 burned down to there foundations during the storm surge. Rockaway Point Fire Department was decimated by Hurricane Sandy along with many surrounding homes. The bay is 1,000 feet behind the fire house and the Atlantic Ocean is a quarter mile away. Pellets ignited in a Sioux Lane resident's trash can Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters extinguished a fire in a Sioux Lane resident's trash can which released small billows of potentially harmful chlorine smoke Sunday. The fire was started accidentally when the resident moved some chlorine tablets from one pail into another, according to Franklin Lakes Fire Chief Denny Knubel. The tablets, which are used to kill bacteria in swimming pools, apparently reacted with something in the container, he said. "It could have been just about anything. It could have been Coca-Cola," Knubel said. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, chlorine can ignite or explode when it comes into contact with many materials, including combustable substances (like gas or alcohol,) reducing agents (sodium, aluminum…

Emotional, dramatic reenactment illustrates drunk driving's consequences — from injury, to death, to prison
Sometimes talking to teenagers may not be enough to get your point across. Despite the advice and warnings of parents, teachers and even some friends, apprioximately 3,000 of teens still die every year in drunk driving-related car accidents. Parent volunteers Nick and Larissa Pokrovsky, of Franklin Lakes, and scores of other volunteers, got together to build a program they hope may convey the very real dangers of drunk driving. The program at Ramapo High School stresses that the decision to drink alcohol and get behind the wheel can affect many more people than just the one who's drinking, according to the organizers. Students and local first responders volunteered to participate in a 30 minute reenactment of a drunk driving accident and …
