The national event is intended not only to celebrate and honor acclaimed children's author Theodor Seuss Geisel — more commonly known as Dr. Seuss — but also to encourage children to keep reading and learning. Seuss’ creative, rhyming books have been read to children by U.S. presidents, hall of fame baseball players, celebrities and by millions of moms and dads. Mayor Bivona, donned the signature Cat in the Hat headwear and read to a class of students at High Mountain Road School. The Franklin Lakes council took initial steps to wrangle $1.2 million for repair of the worst roads in the borough and eyed an additional $700,000 per year after that to keep ahead of deteriorating streets here. Mayor Frank Bivona and Borough Engineer Kevin Boswell discussed the pressing need for improvements at a council meeting last week, according to a report on northjersey.com. Officials said the task would likely cost the town $1.2 million — some of the cost tacked onto the 2013 operating budget, while some of it would have to be bonded, the website reported. While the borough typically paid attention to the roads most in need of repair, they hadn't been as diligent on basic maintenance, Boswell said. He told the council to dog-ear $…

“We will meet the challenges ahead with the goal of doing what’s best for Franklin Lakes,” Mayor Frank Bivona said at the borough reorganization meeting.
Franklin Lakes Mayor Frank Bivona was rosy on his outlook for the year ahead at the borough's annual reorganization meeting Tuesday. Incumbent council members Charles Kahwaty and Thomas Lamix were sworn in for new full terms after running unopposed in 2012. Lamix filled in for former councilman Bill Smith when he became borough attorney. Nathalie Lota was also appointed to her second term as council president. Bivona noted the time elected officials invest in the community, including 120 meetings in the past year. “That doesn’t even include sub-committee meetings,” he said. “These people put a lot of time into the community with a lot of caring.” Bivona thanked the borough’s emergency personnel for their efforts during Hurricane Sandy, …

Officials and residents at a state hearing on Orange and Rockland's response to Hurricane Sandy complained of a lack of communication and information in the weeks after Hurricane Sandy.
Most of the few dozen local officials and residents who attended a state hearing on Orange & Rockland’s response to Hurricane Sandy Wednesday afternoon in Ramsey wanted answers to the same questions: Why wasn’t the utility able to tell customers when power would be restored? Why did the restoration effort seem so haphazard? Does O&R give priority to customers in New York over those in New Jersey? Franklin Lakes Mayor Frank Bivona went so far as to call O&R’s response to the storm “deplorable.” He told representatives he was treated disrespectfully by O&R employees when trying to get information from them during the storm, and never received the answers he was looking for. “O&R works for us, and if I took a poll in Franklin Lakes right now…

Four utility crews are on Franklin Lakes streets following "high level conversations" between the borough and the utility company, according to Mayor Frank Bivona
Four Orange & Rockland Utility crews were in Franklin Lakes on Thursday helping the borough remove downed trees and clear roads, according to Mayor Frank Bivona. "The Borough was able to hold high level conversations with Orange and Rockland Electric last night and this morning," Bivona wrote in a borough wide email Thursday. Officials were seeing significant activity Thursday morning throughout the borough, with Orange & Rockland working on transmission lines and sub-stations that feed Franklin Lakes and surrounding areas. Bivona said that many residents have no power by virtue of downed transmission or sub-station infrastructure, and once those are repaired some power will come back. "Others have lost power due to the tremendous …

Mayor Frank Bivona: "It is critical that residents stay safe by staying home. If you can, don't go to work in the morning."
Nearly all of Franklin Lakes is in the dark right now, according to Franklin Lakes Mayor Frank Bivona. Bivona received word from Orange & Rockland that nearly 75 percent of borough homes are without power. "Trees, branches, utility poles and power lines are down in many areas of town, with roads blocked and impassable," Bivona told residents. "At this time, it is critical that residents stay safe by staying home. If you can, don't go to work in the morning. The roads are hazardous. Keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles." The mayor provided several safety tips to Franklin Lakes residents If you experience a power outage, don't assume that Orange & Rockland automatically knows about it or that someone else will report it. To be sure …
