Adam Carcione places 4th and Sam Judd finishes 9th
Ramapo Fencing Coach Paul Apostol writes in with the following report: Fencing against a very strong field, including his teammate Adam Carcione, junior Alex Gorloff went 8-1 in the final round robin to clinch the NJ State Individual Championship on Sunday. Alex’s victory marks the third time in a row that a Ramapo fencer has won the State Championship in sabre, and is the 7th State Championship for Ramapo sabreists in the last 8 years. Alex will be back next year to try to match the record of his former squad mate Charles Copti, who won back-to-back State Championships. Alex has an extraordinarily long reach, which leaves his opponents flummoxed as to how they got hit when they thought he was too far away to land a touch. And the good …

Sunday, February 24
The following sports report was submitted by Ramapo Fencing Coach Paul Apostol: It was a disappointing day all around on Sunday as the sabre squad, which finished 1st at Cetrulo, dropped to 4th place in the State Squad Championship, while the epee squad, which finished 2nd at Cetrulo dropped to 5th at States. Foil also lagged, placing 13th at States out of the field of 16, a lower placement than their 26th out of 48 schools at Cetrulo. The entire team did their best but it was just one of those days where hardly anything they tried went well. It may be that North Hunterdon is at a higher altitude than Ramapo and the thin air did not have enough oxygen for the boys to operate at full throttle. Alex Gorloff on the sabre A-strip and Adam …

Overall record stands at 12-3
Ramapo defeated Teaneck 17-10 (14-10) in the last dual meet of the season on Friday. Ramapo got off to an uncharacteristically slow start when the sabreists dropped two of their three opening round bouts. Foil added to the problem by dropping all three of their first round bouts to put the score at Teaneck 5, Ramapo 1, the biggest lead that Ramapo has allowed any competitor this season. Fortunately, Ramapo epeeist fenced very well, sweeping all three of their bouts to close Teaneck’s lead to 5-4. In the second round sabre went 2-1, and foil went 1-2 to finally gain a one-bout lead for Ramapo. Ramapo epeeists, who were the stars of tonight’s meet, again swept all three of their bouts to give Ramapo a 10-8 lead, which it never relinquished…

The loss drops the team to an overall 10-3 record for the year
Ramapo lost a close match Wednesday against Ridge 13-14 (12-14) and were eliminated from the team championship. In the round of 8 all the competitors are really tough. Ramapo fencers who should be proud to get to the round of 8 fenced really well against an excellent team and came within one bout of winning. Going into the competition we were hoping that our dominant sabre squad would match the record of their dominant foil squad and that our epee squad could go 5-4 to clinch the meet. As predicted our sabre went 8-1 matching their foil that went 8-1, but although they were fencing very well against excellent epeeists, our epee squad was able to make only four victories, which tilted the match to Ridge. Ramapo fencers did well in the …

Ramapo’s sabre and epee squads offset Wayne’s strength in foil to win the meet 18-9
Fencing Wayne Hills Tuesday, Ramapo fencers jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first round on the strength of a 3-0 record by the sabre squad, a 2-1 record in epee and a 1-2 record in foil. Wayne’s foilists dominated Ramapo fencers during the entire meet, however. In the second round epee cleaned up with a 3-0 record while sabre went 2-1. Wayne then swept all three of the foil bouts to put the match score at 11-7. In the third round, Ramapo sabreists won the first two bouts but in the third sabre bout Wayne’s A-strip sabreists, Austin Hong popped his knee and was given a 10-minute time out to recover. While Hong was taking his time out and with the meet score at 13-7 we proceeded to the foil bouts. Ramapo dropped the first foil bout, but in …

Many team fencers placed well, earning their share of the 72 medals awarded.
The Frosh-Soph Fencing Tournament used to be held on a statewide basis until it got so big that it became unmanageable. Then, starting in 2009, the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, the governing body for fencing, asked each of the regions in the state to run the tournament on a regional basis. Every year since then the Bergen-Passaic Fencing League has selected Ramapo to run the tournament. It is now considered by most to be the best-run tournament in the state. This year, all 72 medals were awarded and everyone was on their way out the door by 3 p.m. compared with many recent tournaments with fewer fencers held elsewhere that did not end until 10 p.m. Ramapo fencers Sunday brought home many of the medals that were …

Ramapo Fencers battled back a second round rally by Pingry to post another win on Wednesday. The Green Raiders advance to the Round of Eight in the State Team Championship following their 16-11 (14-10) defeat of the Bernards school. Ramapo fencers jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first round on the strength of 2-1 records in sabre, foil, and epee. However, they had a setback in the second round when Pingry turned the tables by going 2-1 in all three weapons to tie the score at 9-9. Before the beginning of the third round the team had a huddle where everyone refocused on the business at hand. The sabreists opened the round with a clean sweep, going 3-0. The foilists lost their first bout in the round but Tanner Frank overwhelmed his opponent…

Tuesday, February 5
Once again Ramapo’s journey to the District crown was a nip and tuck battle with archrival Don Bosco. But unlike last year, when at the end of the tournament they were tied for total victories and the winner had to be decided by counting touches, this time Ramapo won cleanly with a total of 69 bouts won vs. 67 for Don Bosco. Ramapo had the lead going into its next to last foil match against Don Bosco, and needed only one victory to clinch the overall gold. Ramapo lost the first two bouts and left the burden of producing a victory weighing on the shoulders of A-strip foilist Tanner Frank. Once again, the fans were in nail-biting mode as Tanner traded touches with his opponent until the score was tied at 4-4. They went back and forth for …

Thursday, January 31
Ramapo sabreists competing against West Milford on Thursday began in their usual dominant fashion, going 3-0 in the first round. Foilists did an admirable job going 2-1, but in a surprising upset, W. Milford epeeists, who are traditionally very strong, beat our epee squad 2-1 to put the first round score at 6-3, Ramapo. Ramapo subbed in most of their second string in the second round of sabre and foil but a number of unexpected defeats which left the score at 9-6 after the foil round convinced the team that they should keep their epee starters in the meet. With the pressure on, the epeeists validated this decision by going 3-0 in the second round to bring the score at the end of the round to 12-6. Sabre starter, Chris Muller stayed in the…

Raiders fight their overall dual meet record to 8-2
Ramapo starters got the meet off to a great start as the sabreists and epeeists both went 3-0, while the foilists went 1-2 to bring the first round score to 9-2. In the second round the sabreists swept all three bouts again and the foilists went 2-1 to bring the score to 12-3. The epeeists took over, won the first bout to bring the score to 13-3 and Scott Zellers took the strip and dominated his opponent to win his bout and clinch the meet at 14-3. From this point on all starters were replaced by subs that won five of their bouts to finish the meet at 19-8. Sabreists Alex Gorloff, Adam Carcione and Chris Muller all went undefeated with 2-0 records. There was never any doubt in any of their bouts. Alex won both of his bouts by 5-2, Adam won…

Great job by the unsung leader and mentor, Coach Paul apostol. Continued success is so difficult in sports in general. Under coach Paul, Ramapo's dynasty is well in place. Cheers   more ›
