Two new Wyckoff school board members were appointed Monday to the township board of education following the resignations of two sitting trustees earlier this year. Chris Della Pietra and Dr. Samir Taneja were selected by the board after a two week long application, interview and selection process. Taneja and Della Pietra will begin their one year terms immediately, according to Wyckoff BOE President Rob Francin. Della Pietra had been similarly selected to fill a vacancy on the board in August of 2011 following the resignation of Diane Sobin. He subsequently lost a bid to earn a full 3-year term last November. Catherine Runge and Jill Mortimer stepped down from the board earlier this month, making way for the latest selections. Have a …

Following the resignations of Catherine Runge and Jill Mortimer, 2012 election losers could make a comeback.
Two school trustees resigned from the Wyckoff Public School Board of Education Monday night, leaving the seven-member body with a pair seats up for grabs. Both Catherine Runge and Jill Mortimer resigned with the remainder their 2013 term left, according to Board of Education President Rob Francin. Mortimer the superintendent of schools in Moonachie, has been "working night and day to get that district back up and running as the schools were destroyed" by Hurricane Sandy, Francin said. The vacancies come just nine weeks after elections in which township voters chose to seat Danielle Swenson, John Carolan, and Kathy Bowers on the school board. The two men who had run for the position but were not elected, Bob Buono and Chris Della Pietra, …

To the Editor: Chris Della Pietra has my complete support for election to the BOE. As a one year incumbent, Chris has demonstrated the qualities and skills that are critical to having a successful board. He correctly understands the roles of being a board member and digs deep into the materials and issues so he is well informed of all perspectives. With this information, he offers his opinion and makes decisions that are considerate of all the stakeholders involved — even those who are not present. As representatives of the community, board members should represent all taxpayers. Chris does this well. Chris also listens to others, considers their input, offers his own, and is flexible enough to accept the recommendations of others over …

Dear Editor: It is a sincere pleasure to write a few words about incumbent candidate Chris Della Pietra and John Carolan, who are running for seats on the Wyckoff Board of Education. As a fellow board member, I have worked closely with Chris on the Finance Committee for more than a year now. I am most impressed with his ability to identify a problem, consider [an] alternative approach for addressing it, and then make the right decision for the benefit of the school system. He puts the required time into being prepared for meetings and attending them. His role as a board member is clearly a priority in his life. Chris deserves the opportunity to continue to serve the Wyckoff educational community. He is an asset that we do not want to …

Candidates gave their opinions on taxes, technology and professional development
More than 70 residents drove through wind and rain Monday night to hear arguments from the four candidates competing for two seats on the Wyckoff Board of Education. After a brief introduction by each candidate, PTO Coordinating Council President Suzanne Anderson began a question and answer period using questions generated by the audience. Questions were written on index cards and collected by PTO Presidents earlier in the evening and candidates were given 90 seconds to respond. All four candidates were in agreement with the importance of providing the best education possible for each of the township's public schools. Kathy Bowers, a 19-year veteran of the Wyckoff Schools said that along with her insights as a parent, teacher and long-time…
