Opinion: Christie Hits Homerun with GOP Keynote

Here's what Wyckoff's mayor had to say about the N.J. governor's address

Wyckoff Mayor Chris DePhillips is in Florida for the Republican National Convention, attending as an Honorary Delegate with the N.J. Delegation.  DePhillips was on the floor during Gov. Chris Christie's rousing keynote address to convention-goers. You can watch the speech or read the full text here. Here's what DePhillips had to say about Christie's keynote: Governor Christie hit a home run with his keynote address.  He has put New Jersey on the national map in an effective, positive way.  He showed the country tonight that the Christie Administration's successes in smaller government, lower taxes, and education and tenure reform can and will be replicated by the federal government under Romney-Ryan leadership.  The Governor also made the …

Christie was supposed to be speaking for electing a president not himself. He sounded like he had a case of "I-itis" Inflammation of one's self. But who knows maybe he don't like Romney. I really worry about too much power being given to states. There are states due to religion who do not allow the lottery. They say its a sin to gamble. We can say church and state separate but once a politician …   more ›

No Way to Later Closing Times, Committee Tells Blue Moon Owner

Committeemen, police chief say recent history of incidents at the popular Mexican restaurant is reason enough to put the brakes on Howie Felixbrod's request.

The owner of Blue Moon, a popular Wyckoff bar and restaurant, was again denied a request to extend drinking hours following a letter from the township's chief of police citing a "significant" number of incidents and violations linked to alcohol consumption at the restaurant.  Howie Felixbrod, the owner of Blue Moon, said he wrote a letter to Committeeman Kevin Rooney requesting the township ammend the ordinance that says Wyckoff businesses must close by 1 a.m. Felixbrod was looking to extend hours at Blue Moon by one hour in an effort to compete with other local restaurants.  But at an unrelated meeting sometime after township officials received his letter, Felixbrod spoke to Wyckoff Mayor Chris DePhillips, who took the air out of any …

Ridgewood Hikes Water Rate Again, Neighboring Mayors Call Move Unjustifiable

Ratepayers will now pay $4.42 per 1,000 gallons, up nine cents over the current rate

Residents in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Wyckoff and Midland Park will be paying more money for their water following the Ridgewood Village Council's unanimous decision to hike rates an additional 2 percent — their second hike for 2012.  Residents will now pay $4.42 per 1,000 gallons, up nine cents over the current rate. Village Manager Ken Gabbert said the hikes should become effective in a few weeks, once billing catches up. Despite the hikes — now up 5 percent for the year and 31 percent since 2009 — and a pending lawsuit, village officials maintain that ratepayers are still getting a good deal. Gabbert provided a document detailing the rates of water utilities in the surrounding area. The document shows Ridgewood rates being among the lowest…

Wyckoff Mayor Thanks Veterans on Memorial Day

"Memorial Day in Wyckoff speaks to what we are as a community—one that cherishes our freedom, our families, and our fundamental right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Mayor Chris DePhillips gave the following address at the Wyckoff Memorial Day ceremony on Monday:  Dear Members of the Township Committee; Master of Ceremonies Charles Ryan; Grand Marshal Raymond Zegel; Major Paul Bollenbacher; members of the Parade Committee; all the Veterans here today; and all Wyckoff Residents:  Welcome to the 2012 Veterans Memorial Day Service. The setting for this service every year is the beautiful Wyckoff Reformed Church, which is the site of the Township’s awe-inspiring War Memorial.    This service is an annual event where we pause to remember Wyckoff’s War Dead.    Our Memorial Day service today honors Wyckoff’s Heroes from World I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War who made the supreme sacrifice…

Township Celebrates New Chapter with Re-Opening of Wyckoff Public Library

Saturday marked the end of more than a year of construction at the library

Saturday morning marked the end of a long rebuilding process and the beginning of a celebration of learning at the Wyckoff Public Library. But before its doors were officially opened, staff, supporters and trustees gathered on a clear, sunny morning just outside the newly renovated library to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony recognizing many involved in the process. "Today is a great day in many ways — it's nice and sunny and the library is done," said Library Board of Trustees President Vincent Antonacci. "It's a proud moment for all of us here in Wyckoff." The Board of Trustees honored Alma Mader with a plaque celebrating her years of service to the library. "This is a dream come true, it has been a long time coming and it was many many …

Ramapo Senior Receives Scholarship, Praise from Wyckoff Committee

Scholarship awarded by New Jersey League State of Municipalities

The Township Committee announced Tuesday that Wyckoff resident Blain Bradley was selected as the winner of a $1,000 scholarship. Bradley, a senior at Ramapo High School, was chosen for the honor after submitting an essay to the New Jersey League State of Municipalities on local governance. The essay begins by quoting James Madison — "If all men were angels, government would not be necessary." — and goes on to outline the workings of municipal government and Bradley's high opinion of the township government over the years, without naming specific governing body members past or present. "Living in Wyckoff has bettered my life tremendously," Bradley wrote. "It's a town that is rich in culture, history, and there is never a dull moment here." …

Wyckoff Welcomes Waldwick Prime Meats to Main Street

Grand opening was held Monday

Local business owners and township officials were on hand to help Emilio Vitolo throw a grand opening event at his new Wyckoff butcher shop, Waldwick Prime Meats, on Monday. The business, which relocated recently from its location in — you guessed it — Waldwick, has been in operation for more than 50 years, Vitolo said, so when he decided to relocate to 384 Main Street in Wyckoff, keeping a familiar name was vital. "It's important, it connects us to the reputation of the store," Vitolo said Monday. The new location has everything Vitolo was looking for, including great exposure and sufficient parking, the owner said Monday. Waldwick Prime Meats opened about four weeks ago, but Vitolo said he wanted to give the business a cushion to between…

Gov. Christie Gives Wyckoff 9/11 Memorial Flag [Photo]

Flag was flown over World Trade Center on Sept. 11 anniversary

Governor Chris Christie sent Wyckoff a powerful token memorializing last year's 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. A flag flown over the World Trade Center site on 9/11/11 was presented to Mayor Chris DePhillips by Matthew Mowers, the regional director of Intergovernmental Affairs for Chris Christie, last Thursday. A number of other flags were presented to other communities, according to the mayor, who said that Wyckoff's flag would be placed in a case and kept in Town Hall. "Wyckoff was hit hard and we lost 11 residents," said Mayor Chris DePhillips. "It is very fitting that we received this flag." The mayor said that Governor Christie also sent him a letter thanking DePhillips for his service.  DePhillips said his family was …

Facing Ire Over Exemptions, Committee Puts Brakes on Larkin Fee

Proposed charge for patrons tabled for further discussion

The Township Committee made an about face on a proposal that would have asked residents to pay $25 per use for access to the Larkin House. The mayor and committee faced pressure at Monday night's meeting from a group of about a dozen seniors representing Activities Unlimited, the members of which opposed the ordinance that included an exemption of fees for Wyckoff Senior Citizens Club but not for their group. "We have enjoyed use of the Larkin House since it was first made available," AU representative Joseph MacDougall told the committee. "We treat the facility respectfully and after our use, make efforts to leave it in good condition." MacDougall said that many groups using the meeting space are not comprised of seniors — including the …
