A Wyckoff-based charity is accused of scamming donors who contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to a Hurricane Sandy relief organization. The operators of the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation, John Sandberg and Christina Terraccino, collected $631,000 from various sources and only gave a tiny fraction — $1,650 — to those in need, according to a report on northjersey.com. The pair are accused of spending the donations on heating oil for their Sparta home, Apple products and dinner at a Spanish restaurant in Newark, according to Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa. Sandberg and Terraccino used the Wyckoff address of Sandberg’s parents to register the charity with New Jersey, but "authorities said there is no reason to believe Sandberg’s …

Households in Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes rank within the top 1,000 zip codes in the country for charitable giving, according to a report conducted by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. The report is based on Internal Revenue Service records of Americans who in 2008 itemized their deductions; the study provides ZIP-code level detail about the percentage of discretionary income that people in states, cities, and towns are giving to charity. The Chronicle of Philanthropy published an interactive map that can be used to find the charitable contributions of towns across the entire country. 'Cooks for a Cure' is fighting breast cancer — and remembering those who've fought — one recipe at a time
A group of women with a common desire to give back has developed a unique, community-based fundraising project that benefits breast cancer awareness, education, and research. The project — '074ATE1: Cooks For A Cure' — is a cookbook composed entirely of submissions by local Epicureans and dedicated to victims and survivors of breast cancer. Lynn Murphy heads the group, which recently began as a spin-off of the popular "Wyckoff Moms" Facebook page. Under Murphy's direction the fundraising initiative quickly developed into a laser-focused project with the goal of supporting the Avon Foundation for Women Breast Cancer Crusade. "Our hope is to do our part to help eradicate this disease for future generations. We do this in honor of every …

A generous township doctor will donate his day's earnings next Friday to the Wyckoff Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Optometrist Ronald Cauchard has lived in Wyckoff for a quarter century and in appreciation for all the kind comforts the town has provided he'll pony up every dollar earned between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, June 15. "The community has supported me for the last 25 years, this is one way I can give back," Cauchard said. "We're trying to make their job a little easier." The 58-year-old father of two has a history of helping out in the community and been involved with the local Lions Club, Boy Scouts, and has donated his time to provide screenings at Wyckoff schools. Students working hard to find sponsors for charity event
In the nail-biting final hours before the first guests were scheduled to arrive, the young women who had organized last year's "Girls Night Out" event sat on the stage facing out toward the product of weeks of trial-by-fire hard work and planning. "It was just like, 'Oh my gosh, we did this,'" remembers Abby Shulman, now 14. "We didn't know we could do it by ourselves. It felt really good." Now, the organizers of Girls Night Out — Kaela Wong, Valerie Kologrivov, Alexa Brewster, Kelly McCauley and Abby Shulman — and a group of dedicated and creative middle schoolers have expanded that project into MAD4kids. MAD4kids will be holding a fundraiser for Girl Up and Invisible Children on April 26, which will have an ad book and include vendors, …
