String of Car Thefts Raises Concerns in Franklin Lakes [Interactive Map]

Three high-end cars have been reported stolen from borough residents since Friday morning.

Three cars stolen between Friday, April 12, and Monday, April 15, have prompted Franklin Lakes Police to renew calls for borough residents to protect their vehicles. “I would once again like to remind people lock their cars every night,” said Detective Lieutenant John Bakelaar. “The mistake a lot of people make is that they know there is a cycle of crime and once that cycle seems to end they go back to their old habits.  This is something they need to do always and forever. Lock your cars and don’t leave valuables in your car.” A 2008 Cadillac was reported stolen Friday by a Sunset Terrace resident. The vehicle had been parked at the front of the home and was apparently stolen during overnight hours. A resident on Old Forge Lane and a …

Pricey Autos Stolen From Franklin Lakes Driveway Had Keys Inside

The BMW and Land Rover stolen overnight from a High Mountain Road driveway were left unlocked with the key fobs in the vehicles.

Two high end SUVs were stolen from the driveway of a High Mountain Road resident overnight after the key fobs were left in both cars, according to Franklin Lakes Police.  The High Mountain Road resident reported that during the overnight hours a 2012 BMW X5 and a 2011 Land Rover were entered and stolen, police said. The cars were unlocked with their key fobs left in the vehicles.  Both the BMW and Land Rover are generally valued at approximately $50,000 each. The garage door of the home was also entered, but the vehicle stored there had a disconnected battery and thieves let it be, according to police. There were no signs of forced entry into the garage and cops believe that a garage door opener from one of the vehicles was used to gain …

When people do things like this they should be made to pay for the police support they receive... It is ridiculous that we are paying tax dollars for our police to follow up on such nonsense! They might as well have put a sign on the windshield that said "take me!!" Please let's enact some laws that say there is a charge for this type of behavior.   more ›

Car Stolen from Resident's Driveway, Franklin Lakes Police Report

A 2007 Toyota Highlander was taken overnight from a resident's Vance Avenue driveway last week. Police are also reporting the Colonial Road theft of approximately $325 worth of valuables from an unlocked car.

A Franklin Lakes resident had her 5-year-old vehicle stolen from the driveway of her Vance Avenue home, and another woman had hundreds of dollars worth of goods lifted from her unlocked car last week, borough police said Monday.   The 2007 Toyota Highlander was stolen sometime overnight on Thursday or Friday of last week, according to Franklin Lakes Police Lieutenant John Bakelaar.  The owner of the Toyota had not left the keys in the car and there was no additional property reported as stolen in the victim's report, Bakelaar said. In a separate incident, a Colonial Road resident reported to police Sunday that sometime during the previous night someone had entered her unlocked Subaru while it was parked in her driveway and made off with …

Crime Summit Returns Wednesday Evening

Officials to discuss crime prevention at 7:30 p.m.

The crime summit held by township officials last week was apparently such a hit that the Wyckoff Police Department is holding another one Wednesday night. "Due to the overwhelming resident support... and to provide an evening session to further inform residents who could not attend the morning session," a second crime prevention awareness session will be conducted by Police Chief Benjamin Fox and Committeeman Kevin Rooney on Wednesday, May 2, 7:30 p.m, the township announced Friday. The event, which will be held in the second floor court room of town hall, will address a number of recent break-ins, car thefts and personal property crimes around Wyckoff, as well as a home invasion Thursday where — according to a report — a North Haledon man…

Interactive Wyckoff Property Crime Map

Incidents spread across township; Car thefts on track to increase sixfold from 2011

Personal property crimes were spread out across the township in 2011, with a slightly higher concentration focused around a few blocks near Godwin and Crescent avenues, according to an analysis of crime data. Wyckoff Patch mapped personal property crimes — burglary, larceny and car theft — reported to the Wyckoff Police Department in 2011. Last year there were 49 burglaries, 78 larcenies and two vehicles were stolen in the township according to police records obtained via a public records request. The map above operates just like a typical Google Map: click and drag to navigate around the map; click the plus or minus button on the lefthand side of the map to zoom in or out. Each red dot represents an incident reported to the Wyckoff Police…

Wyckoff Calls Crime Summit After Weekend Burglary, Car Theft

Police, Township Committeemen to address public Friday morning

Following another break-in at a township home and another high-end vehicle theft, the Wyckoff Police Department and Township Committee have arranged a crime prevention forum with residents for later this week. The aim of the Friday morning summit is to ratchet up public awareness before summer. Committeeman Kevin Rooney said Monday that crime in the township had reached the point where officials needed to reach out to residents in new ways. "We hope to curb this latest crime wave," Rooney said, adding that the downturn in the economy and the township's location were likely factors in the uptick in burglaries and automobile thefts. Burglars used a screwdriver to pry open the back door of an Eastview Terrace home while the homeowners were …

Home Burglarized, Mercedes-Benz Stolen, Wyckoff Police Report

Police warn residents to lock car doors

Wyckoff Police reported three separate incidents of criminals making off with property that didn't belong to them this week.  On Feb. 29, cops received a report that someone earlier in the day had pried open the front door of a Louisa Avenue home. Wyckoff Police responded to the home to investigate the burglary, which had occurred sometime between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and discovered several rooms were ransacked and jewelry, a computer and a $1,500 guitar had been stolen. Local police were assisted by the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department in processing the scene.  A similar front door burglary was attempted earlier in February at a William Way residence in the township. The burglar in that case tried to break in through the front door of…

$90K BMW Stolen From Wyckoff Driveway

Clinton Avenue resident had left keys in car, police say

A Wyckoff resident is out nearly $100,000 after a 2011 BMW loaded with expensive goods was stolen right out of her driveway, according to police. The Clinton Avenue resident told police that she heard her black BMW X6 driving away at about 10:30 p.m. on Friday night and thought a family member was using it, said Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox. "That was not the case," Fox said. Police said that the $90,000 vehicle had been left unlocked in the driveway with the keys and approximately $5,000 worth of personal items inside. "In the car were several high end expensive carry bags, a high end purse, an iPod and some expensive miscellaneous stuff," said Fox.  Fox issued the same warning he said he's been preaching to Wyckoff residents for …
