As Recreation Sports Enrollment Falls, Towns Explore Shared Services

A recent drop in enrollment points to the popularity of emerging sports such as lacrosse

Recreation baseball and softball enrollment has dipped varying degrees in both Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes. But that doesn’t necessarily mean children are forsaking sports — quite the contrary. “[Children] could be playing three or four sports any given month,” said Wyckoff Recreation Director Andy Wingfield. “And some do.” With the addition of spring lacrosse two years ago in Wyckoff and the extension of club soccer into spring, many active youngsters are finding they don’t have time for America’s favorite pastime. In Franklin Lakes, only nine seventh and eighth graders signed up for spring rec softball. “There are also a lot of other activities for kids to get involved in — the Wyckoff Family YMCA Sharks Swim Team has a very strong …

@ SK -- what makes you qualified to assess a rec program's operational effectiveness, organization and the quality of work done by volunteer coaches? I beg to differ - I have found the rec office to be responsive, courteous and well run. The coaches have varying degrees of competence, but all in all, the volunteer coaches in town are good people who try to do a good job. Of course, being …   more ›

Township Mulls Pay-to-Play Grass Collection

Wyckoff committeemen say residents have written to town hall complaining about the suspension of town-wide grass clipping removal.

The Wyckoff Township Committee is considering giving residents here an option to pay for curbside removal of grass clippings less than a dozen weeks after the governing body elected to excise the costly service that only 15 percent of citizens were using.  Committeeman Brian Scanlan initiated a discussion with his fellow committeemen at a public meeting Tuesday night, spurred on by notes from several residents displeased with the committee's decision last year. Scanlan's proposal was to gauge interest in a pay-to-play program in which residents ponied up $150 to cover the cost for the township's existing garbage disposal company to cart away grass clippings and then dispose of them. Township officials estimate that cost will be …

Letter to the Editor: Committeeman Thanks a Special Community

Brian Scanlan gives a warm acknowledgment to some caring residents

Dear Editor, Earlier this past summer I had an accident which laid me up for six weeks. During my convalescence, I received hundreds of cards, emails, and calls from folks in Wyckoff. Dozens of people visited me both in the hospital as well as at home, and others sent baskets of fruit and other good cheer. Members of my church, Saint Elizabeth’s, brought me communion and prayed for my rapid recovery. Though I have always known Wyckoff is a special place, my experience over the last 12 weeks has underscored for me just how special our community is, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who reached out to me during a difficult time. Very truly yours,  Brian D. Scanlan Wyckoff Township Committeeman Would you like to …

Madigan Appointed to Zoning Board Despite Scanlan Objection

Lone Democrat says committee had not used due process in selecting alternate zoning board member

The Township's governing body appointed former committeeman Thomas Madigan to a 1-year second alternate position on the Wyckoff Zoning Board on Tuesday despite protest from that board's liaison. Brian Scanlan, the lone Democrat on the committee, said he was left out of the appointment process despite being appointed the liaison to the land use board. The first Scanlan heard of Madigan's appointment was via a telephone call Monday afternoon from Mayor Chris DePhillips, Scanlan said.  Madigan was recently cleared of charges that he slapped a teenager at a Ramapo football game. A longtime Wyckoff resident, Madigan had served 12 years on the Ramapo-Indian Hills Board of Education, as well as the township's Recreation Commission and, during his…

Just because someone has lived in town for 27 years and raised 7 children does not override the necessity for due process. How blatantly disrespectful this is to a man who was the obvious first choice of Wyckoff's voters, not to mention being liaison to this board! How much longer do the "4 Muscateers" think we are going to take of this arrogant attitude. November is just around the corner!! Mr. …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: DePhillips's Take on Township Gov't 'Disingenuous and Wrong'

Send your letters to joseph.gerace@patch.com

Dear Editor, Wyckoff Committeeman Christopher DePhillips’s statement (Wyckoff Suburban News, January 11) that electing Committeeman Brian Scanlan to the Wyckoff mayor or deputy mayor position for 2012 would be “tantamount to changing the Township’s form of government” is both disingenuous and wrong. In Wyckoff’s form of government, the five members of the Wyckoff Township Committee may choose any one of their members for the mayor or deputy mayor positions, which have one-year terms. They may make these choices without regard to political affiliation, which, frankly, matters very little at the local level. Scanlan’s platform of strict fiscal conservatism and protection of our town character clearly resonated with many voters who gave him a…
