"I consider the ACLU inquiries a form of training," says Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox. "That's nothing to be afraid of. It's a good thing. I actually welcome it."
Wyckoff's chief of police says an ACLU report citing his department as one of hundreds that improperly handled an internal affairs request is a learning experience that will result in training for his officers. Last year the ACLU called nearly 500 police departments across the state and asked officers questions about filing IA complaints. More than half the departments answered at least one question incorrectly and 51 departments did not get a single question right, according to the report. In an audio clip played throughout the day Tuesday on WNYC, a caller from the ACLU can be heard in conversation with someone the station identified as a Wyckoff Police officer. “No. No complaints can be taken over the phone – we can’t identify with whom…

Trio charged in Friday night incident outside Giovanni's Pizza owner's home.
Three individuals have been arrested for the attempted armed robbery of a pizzeria owner when he returned home Friday night at around 11:20pm, Wyckoff Police said. Luis Diaz, 21, and Jose Hidalgo, 27, both of Paterson, and Nicole Gorter, 18, of North Haledon, were each charged with first-degree robbery and possession of marijuana. According to Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox, officers responded to an Eisenhower Court home late Friday evening on a report of gunshots being fired. Giovanni's Pizza owner Giovanni Raffo told police he had been confronted by two men in his driveway, Fox said. During the confrontation, a handgun in the possession one of the men was discharged, Fox said. Raffo was not injured and the two men fled the area, Fox …

While some parents are calling for stricter procedures to protect their children and others say current measures are sufficient, officials are say they are exercising prudence.
Wyckoff Public School officials and board members, parents, and township officials gathered at a public meeting Monday night to discuss school safety, just three days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Superintendent Richard Kuder reviewed the schools' safety protocol, including twice monthly emergency drills at every school and the implementation of a buzzer system that screens those looking to make entry into school buildings. Kuder didn't rule out future changes to security here, but suggested administrators would look for ways to improve. “We will continue to look for ways to upgrade the system if that’s possible," he said to the assembled crowd at Eisenhower Middle School. "There are things the principals and I have …

The Wyckoff Chief of Police and township officials praised the police department's traffic bureau Monday night for its community road safety program. The traffic department, once again, received the award from AAA of North Jersey, which annually recognizes police programs in Bergen, Passaic and Essex counties. Chief Benjamin Fox said it was a "distinct pleasure and honor" to present the award to the committee on behalf of the traffic department. "The average citizen will probably have some involvement with the police department in a traffic matter probably more than anything else," Fox said. "Traffic enforcement and everything that comes along with it is extremely important." Fox said that of the hundreds of municipalities considered for …

Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox released a "Halloween and Child Safety" notice to parents and township residents Tuesday. This letter is reprinted in full below: Each year I write a Halloween safety message for parents that is seen via the press or through the schools. It includes the typical information such as children using caution while walking the streets, warnings to drivers that children will be on the roadways, carrying lights and putting reflective material on costumes, staying safe by being in groups, tainted candy concerns, respect for others property, and a number of other issues. There are probably few issues as important as the health and safety of our children. It's what is of utmost importance to every parent. It's what …

Committeemen, police chief say recent history of incidents at the popular Mexican restaurant is reason enough to put the brakes on Howie Felixbrod's request.
The owner of Blue Moon, a popular Wyckoff bar and restaurant, was again denied a request to extend drinking hours following a letter from the township's chief of police citing a "significant" number of incidents and violations linked to alcohol consumption at the restaurant. Howie Felixbrod, the owner of Blue Moon, said he wrote a letter to Committeeman Kevin Rooney requesting the township ammend the ordinance that says Wyckoff businesses must close by 1 a.m. Felixbrod was looking to extend hours at Blue Moon by one hour in an effort to compete with other local restaurants. But at an unrelated meeting sometime after township officials received his letter, Felixbrod spoke to Wyckoff Mayor Chris DePhillips, who took the air out of any …

Roadwork may extend into Thursday, an official said
Underground roadwork that caused traffic back ups at a busy township intersection on Monday and Tuesday will be continued Wednesday and possibly Thursday, a PSE&G representative told the township Tuesday. Complications at Franklin and Wyckoff avenues caused the utility company to revise its work schedule. "I was told late today that due to the grouping of all sorts of utility pipes in that narrow stretch of road that it will probably take a full day tomorrow and possibly into Thursday," said Township Administrator Bob Shannon at a committee work session Tuesday. Shannon added that he would send an email blast to residents if the utility company notifies the township that work would definitely continue beyond Wednesday. PSE&G crews have …

The crime summit held by township officials last week was apparently such a hit that the Wyckoff Police Department is holding another one Wednesday night. "Due to the overwhelming resident support... and to provide an evening session to further inform residents who could not attend the morning session," a second crime prevention awareness session will be conducted by Police Chief Benjamin Fox and Committeeman Kevin Rooney on Wednesday, May 2, 7:30 p.m, the township announced Friday. The event, which will be held in the second floor court room of town hall, will address a number of recent break-ins, car thefts and personal property crimes around Wyckoff, as well as a home invasion Thursday where — according to a report — a North Haledon man…

What is wrong with you people?? For all the complaining that people do to complain about a very few unethical officers, do you realize that a police officer might just be the person who saves your life one day in any number of ways? My Pop, who was a police officer in Wyckoff many years ago, still to this day would not think twice about being the first man jumping in a dangerous situation to save…   more ›
