Scholarship awarded by New Jersey League State of Municipalities
The Township Committee announced Tuesday that Wyckoff resident Blain Bradley was selected as the winner of a $1,000 scholarship. Bradley, a senior at Ramapo High School, was chosen for the honor after submitting an essay to the New Jersey League State of Municipalities on local governance. The essay begins by quoting James Madison — "If all men were angels, government would not be necessary." — and goes on to outline the workings of municipal government and Bradley's high opinion of the township government over the years, without naming specific governing body members past or present. "Living in Wyckoff has bettered my life tremendously," Bradley wrote. "It's a town that is rich in culture, history, and there is never a dull moment here." …

Despite spending, testing priorities, arts are offered in nearly every school, but with fewer students and staffing
A new report on the state of arts education in New Jersey reflects the quandary of how to strike a balance between the recognized needs for music and the visual arts with the financial and testing realities that public schools face. While the report paints a picture of how schools are coping with that balance, the news was not all rosy, with fewer students — and teachers – in art classes. The New Jersey Arts Education Census Project — commissioned by the State Council on the Arts, the NJ Department of Education, and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation — led with the positive signs. Surveying virtually every public school in the state, the researchers found that actual programs in 2011 had slightly increased in the last five years since the …

New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools to compare arts education offerings.
A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey schools to be released Thursday finds a correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment. The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research. According to Robert Morrison, project coordinator of the report and founder of Quadrant Arts Education Research, the report compiled survey responses from about 99 percent of the …

District: "The goal is to clarify, augment, and improve the concepts and thinking."
Members of the Wyckoff Board of Education and Wyckoff Schools Superintendent Richard Kuder have worked closely this year to develop a process they hope will engage the community in a transformative conversation about planning for the future of township schools. This month and next, during the first phase of this process, separate workshops for key groups of community members will take place. These workshops will involve a guided discussion of significant ideas underpinning the guiding principles for future planning. Kuder has developed a draft of these guiding ideas for the board and community to critique. Workshop attendees will be provided with the opportunity to learn these ideas and then participate in a collaborative critical …

Help us celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week
“Every day I am asked what the secret is to ensuring every child in New Jersey graduates from high school ready for college and career, and I always have one simple response – outstanding teachers.” Those are the words of NJ Acting Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf in a video address made available Monday on the state's website. “I began my career as a high school history teacher, and I can honestly say that I never worked harder or felt more rewarded than I did during those four years," Cerf said. "We as a state should make sure that we celebrate outstanding educators every day for their work with our children and for developing the next generation of leaders.” You can help celebrate local teachers who make a difference in our …

"I am deeply moved," said Ed Haddad, a music teacher who was likely to lose his job before the community came to his aid.
A crowd of nearly 200 parents and students attended the Ramapo-Indian Hills Board of Education meeting Monday night to petition trustees to spare beloved music teacher, Ed Haddad. The first rumors began to circulate among staff and students last week that Haddad’s contract would not be renewed for the 2012-2013 school year. Haddad, a music teacher at Ramapo and Indian Hills, had replaced Kevin DeFreest two years ago when DeFreest retired. Speaking to a number of students and parents over the past several days, it was generally held that in Haddad’s short time at Ramapo, the quality of music — both in vocal and orchestral performances — had improved dramatically. Students, parents and educators agreed that his influence was only the …
