Ramapo Fencing Slashes West Milford

Raiders top Highlanders 17-10.

The following sports report was submitted by Ramapo Fencing Coach Paul Apostol.

At the meet against West Milford on Thursday, Ramapo sabreists swept all three of their first round bouts, epeeists added two wins and foilists one win to establish a 6-3 record at the end of the round. We prefer a bigger lead to start substituting so we stayed with our sabre starters who again swept all three of their bouts, producing a 9-3 score which was enough of a lead to start substituting. We put in one foil sub and replaced all three of our starting epeeists and the foil and epee squads got the score to 13-5. In the first bout of the 3rd round sabreist Greg Duch produced the 14th win to secure the Team victory for Ramapo. Subs in all three weapons delivered another three victories to produce the final score of 17-10.

The Ramapo sabre squad produced a 9-0 record with starters, Overall Captain, senior Alex Gorloff, squad captain, senior Chris Muller and junior Adam Carcione, all producing 2-0 records while winning convincingly with 5-2 or 5-1 bouts.

Three more victories were added by third round subs, senior Greg Duch, junior Dan Carione, and freshman Gavyn DeLuca, who won his first ever varsity bout by a score of 5-0. The Team is proud that Alex Gorloff’s name now appears on a very elite banner in the big gym, indicating that he has already produced 100 victories for Ramapo. Stay tuned for another fencer’s name being added to that banner in the near future.

Epeeists went 5-4 with starters Squad Captain, senior Matt Martone and senior Michael Daly each going 1-0. Matt’s victory was a very strong 5-0 bout. Second round subs, junior Adam Polevoy and Ed Lim, produced equaling impressive 5-1 and 5-0 wins. In the third round John Lim, Ed’s brother, also produced a convincing 5-2 victory.

Ramapo foilists went 3-6, a disappointing finish, but Squad Captain, senior Daniel Kim, who is beginning to fence up to his potential made two strong victories. Eugene Won also stepped up his game and produced a third victory for the squad. The foilists will work hard to improve their game. The Team needs them to be as sharp as they can be.
