Middle Schoolers Conduct 'Best Civil War Facial Hair' Contest

Eisenhower Middle School students in Wyckoff voted for a winner while raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of a military captain who was killed in Afghanistan.

The following was submitted to Patch by Wyckoff Schools.

As part of their study on the Civil War, 8th grade students at Eisenhower Middle School in Wyckoff participated in a “Best Civil War Facial Hair” fundraiser.

Students created short commercials giving biographical details about a Civil War general, with the goal of promoting their general’s facial hair. Three of the top commercials were chosen by the 8th grade social studies staff, and students throughout the school were given the opportunity to vote for the “Best Civil War Facial Hair.”

Donations were accepted as part of the voting process to support American veterans.

As an incentive for participation in the fundraiser, Mr. Adam Wirjosemito, a seventh grade social studies teacher, kindly volunteered to shave his beard in the style of the winner.

The winner of the “Best Civil War Facial Hair” was General George McClellan, whose commercial was created by Charlie M., Keanaan M., Jimmy M., Samuel R., and Jack M. from Team 7.

This year, Eisenhower students raised $310 in two days, which will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Captain Jason Jones who was killed in Afghanistan in June of 2014.

We are extremely proud of our students!
