Franklin Lakes Student Wins VFW Essay Contest on Patriotism

The eighth-grader's essay has one at the county level, and has now advanced to the state level.

A Franklin Lakes middle school student’s essay is on its way to compete in a statewide competition on patriotism after winning The Patriot’s Pen essay contest in Bergen County.

Allison Dalton, an 8th grader at Franklin Avenue Middle School, recently won the contest, which is sponsored each year by the VFW. According to a release from the VFW, participants were asked to write a 300-400 word essay describing what patriotism means to them. 

Dalton’s essay was chosen as the NJ VFW District 2, which is comprised of all of Bergen County, winner. Her essay will now compete at the state level.

The winner of the NJ competition will be announced at an awards ceremony in Manville on February 15, and will move on to compete nationally in a contest that gives out thousands of dollars to Patriot’s Pen contest winners and finalists each year.
