Franklin Lakes Appoints New Curriculum Director

Replacement for Cheryl Best will be voted on by the board of education at a September meeting.

Following three uncertain months surrounding a controversial opening in the position, a new curriculum director for the Franklin Lakes school district has been appointed from within, Superintendent Frank Romano announced.

The district began a search for a new curriculum director in early May, following a split decision by the board of education not to renew the contract of curriculum director Cheryl Best in April.

The process to find a replacement went through multiple phases that reviewed around 55 applicants, according to Romano.

Romano said in a release that Ann Jameson, a fourth grade teacher at High Mountain Road School for the last six years, began transitioning into her responsibilities as director of curriculum and instruction on Aug. 1, and will require a vote by the school board at its Sept. 10 meeting to retroactively appoint her to the position.

The board granted Romano the authority to fill vacancies in the district at a meeting in June, which according to the superintendent is a routine procedure given the board's limited meeting schedule during the summer.

Jameson holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and communications from Boston College, as well as two master’s degrees—in education leadership and literacy specialty—from Columbia University’s Teachers College, Romano said.

Jameson was also recognized last year with the Bergen County Teacher’s Award for High Mountain Road.

In addition to her classroom experience, Romano said, Jameson completed an administrative internship program under outgoing Woodside Avenue principal Helen Attenello and High Mountain Road principal Jaclyn Bajzath, and also has “a strong history of active participation in major district initiatives.”

“She is the right person for the job and a proven match for Franklin Lakes Public Schools,” Romano said. “She will take the District to its next levels of productivity, professionalism, and success.”
