District: Asbestos Removal at Sicomac School ‘Routine Work’

Asbestos abatement work done in preparation for the installation of new boilers in the school next year.

School officials assured the public Monday night that a project to remove asbestos from the boiler room at Sicomac Elementary School is a common procedure in district schools that posed no health risk to students.

At its July 9 meeting, the board of education approved a $32,400 bid from Wallington, NJ based Lesco Services, Inc. to perform the work.

The project was done in preparation for a boiler replacement at the school next year.

“In any school building that’s built before 1970 there’s asbestos for insulation purposes,” Superintendent Richard Kuder said, calling the abatement “routine work” that is usually performed annually.

Kuder said that precautions were taken during the work and that the school will be safe for opening in September.
