Play...It's All About the Relationship

The front page of the Better Living section in today’s Bergen Record featured an article donned in bold, brightly colored letters entitled TABLETS FOR TOTS? It talked about all the latest tablets, including the Nabi Jr., a Nick Jr. character driven device geared for 3-6 year olds, and the IPotty, yes..that’s right, the IPotty..a training potty with a place for an IPad to entertain the toddler while on his throne. I found today’s morning read to be downright disheartening.

With the holidays right around the corner, parents are looking for the best deals on electronics and toys for their kids. Many adults tend to believe that young children benefit most from high-tech educational toys. However, young children learn best through play. I believe we do not need to force feed academics to toddlers and preschoolers, despite what the TV adds say. What really matters most is the interactions that occur during playtime. As adults, we should strive to spend more time with our children. Sitting down on the floor and playing with your child is the key to building a happy, successful playtime experience as well as a meaningful relationship with your child.

Nourish playtime by being a play partner. Put your phones, tablets and other electronic devices away for a few minutes while you play with your child. Those devices will still be there when you are done. By doing this you are telling your child that you REALLY want to be with THEM.

Allow yourself to play like a kid again and you’ll be amazed how your child will respond. Playtime is not about the TOY…it’s all about the RELATIONSHIP that is fostered during that time and that is what really matters most.
