Bergen Mayor Punched by Political Rival's 80-Year-Old Dad, Reports Say

Altercation broke out near a polling location on Primary Election Day, reports say.

According to multiple reports, a verbal altercation outside a polling location in Bogota ended with the town’s mayor being punched by the 80-year-old father of one of his political rivals. However, those involved are claiming different stories about how the fight broke out.

According to nj.com, Mayor Tito Jackson, who is seeking a one-year unexpired term, filed a police report Tuesday claiming that Salvatore Trotta punched him in a parking lot after he cast his primary ballot Tuesday afternoon.

Trotta, 80, is the father of Democrats for Reform council candidate Tina Trotta, the report said.

According to Jackson, Trotta confronted him, smacked his phone to the ground, and punched him on the left side of the face, nj.com reported.

The two argued over a lawsuit Tina Trotta filed against Bogota for installing a parking lot at Oscar E. Olsen Park, which is near her property, the report said.

However, according to NJPoliticker.com, Trotta said he punched the mayor in self-defense.

According to Trotta, the mayor shoved him to the ground after the two started arguing, and he punched him in response, the report said.

Cops told the papers the incident is under investigation.
