Wyckoff Couple Arrested for DWI

Cops told him he was too drunk to drive. But he didn't listen.

For some married couples a little time apart can't come soon enough, but when Wyckoff Police arrested one man's wife, cops say the husband couldn't even wait until the booze wore off to see her again.

Early Sunday morning,  stopped a vehicle for speeding on Wyckoff Avenue. Officer Michael Demaio charged the driver of the vehicle, Jovita V. Smith-Aramburo, 39, with driving while intoxicated.

Police then determined that her husband, the passenger in the car, was also too intoxicated to drive.

The car was towed and the husband, 40-year-old Gilberto Chavez-Velazquez, hoofed it a couple of blocks back to his home on Old Post Road, Police Chief Benjamin Fox said Tuesday.

At home is where he should have stayed.

Chavez-Velazquez however, got behind the wheel of another vehicle and drove to the station where police were processing his wife on charges of driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a breath test, failure to show a drivers license and reckless driving.

Wyckoff cops recognized the husband and Sgt. Daniel Kellogg arrested Chavez-Velazquez, charging him with driving while intoxicated.

Police ultimately released the husband and wife to a friend, who was most definitely sober, according to Fox.

"Otherwise we would have had a third arrest," Chief Fox said.
