Police: Drunk Man Who Broke Into Wyckoff Homes Just Wanted Nap

27-year-old charged with burglary, criminal mischief

A 27-year-old Ridgewood man was arrested early Wednesday after a night of drinking led him to illegally enter a home to find a warm place to sleep, Wyckoff Police said. 

Alejandro J. Montalvo, of East Ridgewood Avenue, had been out drinking with friends who dropped him off in Wyckoff, according to Chief Benjamin Fox.

"It is believed that in his intoxicated state he was looking for a place to sleep," Fox said.

Wyckoff Police responded to a Lehigh Street residence at 1:09 a.m. on a report that a man had just been inside of the house and fled.

The homeowner reported to police that she was awakened by a Hispanic male standing over her bed, when she screamed the man fled the home.

Police later determined that the man had entered the house through an unlocked door.

About a dozen area police agencies were contacted for assistance in searching the area. Police eventually located a broken window on a porch door of another Lehigh Street home three houses away.

Inside they found Montalvo asleep in the enclosed porch and arrested him on two counts of burglary and criminal mischief.

Bail was set by Judge Russel B. Teschon at $40,000, and Montalvo was sent to Bergen County jail in default of bail.
