Woman Charged with Cashing Phony Checks

Police: N.Y. resident targeted TD Bank

A New York City woman has been arrested by Wyckoff police and charged with theft and fraud.

Police said they were notified by TD Bank, 8 Wyckoff Ave., on Friday that Arielle N. Smith, 20, was attempting to cash a fraudulent check from a Maryland business in the amount of $991.60. Although the checking account and business were legitimate, police said the check was fraudulently produced. An investigation revealed that Smith had cashed phony checks twice that day at TD Bank's other Wyckoff Avenue location and at a branch in Hawthorne, police said, although the suspect was not in possession of the money. Police also said that they believe another person was involved who dropped Smith off at the banks.

Smith was charged with multiple counts of possession of a fictitious credit card, forgery, uttering false documents, impersonating another person, theft by deception and falsifying government documents. She was sent to the Bergen County jail in default of $20,000 bail.
