Waldwick Woman Found Murdered; Ex-Boyfriend Charged

Mary Greff, 23, a young mother and former beauty pageant contestant, was found strangled.

A Wayne restaurant has established a scholarship fund for the infant of a 23-year-old waitress-in-training who was found dead Wednesday in a Bergen County home.

Mary Greff, a former beauty pageant contestant who was in training to become a  kilt girl at The Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery on Route 46 in Wayne, was found dead in her parents' Waldwick home Wednesday morning.

Her ex-boyfriend and father of her 10-month-old son is accused of killing Greff while the infant was in a bassinet in the room and her parents were asleep, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said.

Mark Spatucci has been charged with murder, felony murder, burglary, endangering the welfare of a child and hindering apprehension, Molinelli said in a press release.

Authorities found Spatucci late Wednesday in Midland Park, authorities said.

The manager of the Tilted Kilt confirmed Greff was in training to work there.

“We’re very sorry for her family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them,” the manager, who declined to provide her last name, said.

The restaurant will set up a scholarship fund for Greff’s 9-month-old son.

The restaurant was scheduled to open Sunday morning. Training at the restaurant was cancelled “to allow our employees time to gather and reflect on the situation,” a statement on the restaurant’s Facebook page said. The restaurant plans to open Monday.

Molinelli said Spatucci drove to the home of Greff's parents and entered through a second-floor window and went into her bedroom. Spatucci and Greff got into an argument that turned violent, Molinelli said.

Spatucci killed Greff and left her lying on her bed, Molinelli said. Greff's parents went out Wednesday morning and found her body when they returned at about 11 a.m.

An autopsy is still pending but the cause of death is believed to be asphyxiation, Molinelli said. Greff’s parents were sleeping while Spatucci was in the home and did not notice he was there, Molinelli said.

The two began dating in 2011 and had lived together at Spatucci’s Waldwick home. Greff and her son recently returned to live with her parents, Molinelli said.

Spatucci is scheduled to appear in Superior Court Friday. He is being held on $2 million bail in the Bergen County Jail.
