Driveway Theft of Unlocked Porsche 'Unusual,' Cops Say

The SUV's owners were at home when the car was stolen, Franklin Lakes police say.

There's something "unusual" about the theft Thursday of an unlocked 2013 Porsche from one Franklin Lakes driveway, according to borough police.

Sometime between 3:20 and 3:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon, a black Porsche SUV was stolen from the driveway of an Apple Ridge Road home, Franklin Lakes Police Lt. John Bakelaar said in a release Friday morning.

The car was unlocked and the keys were left inside it, police said.

“This [theft] is unusual because [the car] was taken during the daytime,” Bakelaar said.

And, the homeowners were at home at the time of the theft, police said.

rash of unlocked car thefts that hit the Franklin Lakes-Wyckoff area last year usually happened overnight, Bakelaar said.

This theft comes on the heels of a warning from the Wyckoff Police Department reminding residents to lock their car doors. The public service announcement was prompted by a string of similar thefts in other Bergen County towns, police said.
