Township Police Look to 'Put the Brakes on Fatalities'

Traffic enforcement stepped up; expect to receive summonses, chief says

Expect to receive no breaks from Wyckoff police if you are stopped for a traffic violation over the coming weeks.

The township Police Department will be taking part in "Put the Brakes on Fatalities Day," a national program being sponsored in the Garden State by the Division of Highway Traffic Safety. The initiative is designed to call attention to motor vehicle collisions that cause deaths on roadways.

Chief Benjamin Fox said traffic enforcement is being stepped up now until Oct. 10, when all participating municipalities will report their crash statistics.

"This is going to be a no-nonsense approach to traffic enforcement," Fox said in a news release. "If you get stopped for a traffic violation, expect to be issued a summons."

The chief said 583 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in New Jersey alone last year, with countless injured and extensive, costly property damage. The goal of the initiative is to get motorists to slow down and observe all traffic laws, in hopes that increased compliance will limit collisions on the roadways.

"A motor vehicle crash that can result in a fatality or injury takes only a second of careless driving," Fox said. "The resulting consequences when there is a crash unfortunately can last a lifetime."
