Lights Are Back On, But 700 in Wyckoff Were Without Power This Morning

Approximately 700 homes were without electricity this morning; PSE&G says only 40 without as of 2 p.m.

UPDATE: As of 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, all power should be restored throughout Wyckoff, despite the severity of the storms on Monday morning and evening. The weather report indicates it should be a steamy 91 degrees for much of Tuesday before cooling off in the evening. Wednesday should feature scattered thunderstorms throughout the day.

UPDATE 2:15 p.m.: A storm swept through Wyckoff early this morning, leaving 700 residents without any electricty. Though the vast majority of affected residents are now with power, approximately forty homes are still without wattage.

The storm, which whisked through the tri-state area this morning at around 8 a.m., left approximately 2,400 in Bergen County without any power. The county was under a severe storm warning for much of the morning, though clear skies have since emerged.

Nicole Swan, a spokesperson for PSE&G, said crews are currently in Wyckoff investigating the cause of the problem, though they suspect it was an equiptment issue.

"We still have to figure out exactly what's gone on," Swan said.

She noted that two trucks made repairs to transformers and downed lines throughout the municipality. Much of the power was restored to Wyckoff by noon, though some in the Coolidge area are still unable to utilize electricity.

Police Chief Benjamin Fox said one tree was hit by lightning (on Meadowbrook Road), which was smoldering but otherwise, the storm created no serious issues for the township. Traffic lights were functioning, and traffic was not greatly affected.

All in all, he said "it's difficult to gauge these storms," remarking that the township can really only react when residents call, as the electric companies are largely responsible for restoring services to residents.
