Ramapo College Campus Put On Lock Down After Shooting Scare

Man arrested after false report of a shooting at the Mahwah college

Mahwah police locked down the campus at Ramapo College for about an hour last night after receiving a 911 call reporting an alleged shooting. The 11:30 p.m. call came from a 22-year-old graduate of the college who was attending a party on campus.

According to police, she reported that her ex-boyfriend called her and said he was being held at gunpoint and subsequently shot twice in the shoulder. Police said the caller did not initially know whether the alleged victim was on campus or not.  

Police immediately locked down the campus and began a search for the victim, a 23-year-old West Orange resident. Police conducted a trace of his cell phone and contacted area hospitals and other local police departments, including West Orange.

West Orange police had been simultaneously dispatched to the victim's residence on an unrelated disturbance call, where they found the alleged victim healthy and without gunshot wounds, police said. Gil D. Jaffe, 23, was arrested for allegedly violating a restraining order by contacting his ex-girlfriend. and is scheduled to appear in Mahwah Municipal Court.

The campus was taken off lockdown, and students received a reverse 911 call that the campus was safe.
