Police Recover Sentimental Jewelry, Charge Ex-Doc in November Burglary

Cannon had been arrested in October for burglary, practicing unlicensed medicine

At least one Wyckoff family is thankful after local police recovered sentimental jewelry that police say had been stolen by a troubled former doctor who was trying to pawn it off on the internet.

The Demarest family that had jewelry — including a family heirloom — stolen on November 5, were able to provide police with detailed descriptions of the pilfered goods.

Wyckoff Police Detectives Sergeant Joseph Soto and Sergeant  started scouring the internet and found the stuff online, Fox said.

"When people have something like that stolen, I think the assumption is that you're never going to see it again, Fox said. "I'm really pleased with the determination of my two detectives."

"We solved this one and we got the owners back some very important property," Fox said.

They tracked the haul back to Lisa Cannon, 46, who with four counts of burglary, four counts of theft of property from the exterior of a residence, two counts of possession of stolen property and one count of practicing medicine without a license, police said.

"It's just one [theft] of a string that she did," Fox said.

Police said Wednesday that the area around her Crescent Avenue home had become a hotspot for burglaries then quieted down , but when she was released illegal activities picked up again.

"Initially there were a series of burglaries and thefts ... all right around the immediate area of her home," Fox said. "While she was in jail all the burglaries stopped around her home, and in short order she got out of jail and all the burglaries around her home start up again."

When detectives made the link between Cannon and the Demarest burglary earlier this month the department obtained search warrants for her computer and home and found the stolen goods in her house, Fox said.

Police served Cannon's attorney with a complaint charging her with one count of burglary and theft, and all burglary charges have been referred to Bergen County Superior Court.
