Police: Caretaker Stole From Ill Resident

Hackensack woman charged with theft

Wyckoff police have charged a Hackensack woman with theft after she allegedly bilked a resident who was in her care.

Authorities started investigating Juleen M. Reid, 41, in February after an Allendale resident told police that Reid had taken advantage of her mother, a Wyckoff resident. Reid had worked as an aide in the home of the Wyckoff woman, who has Alzheimer's disease.

Police said Reid got the resident to write a check for $450. The Hackensack resident allegedly told the ill woman that the check was to purchase items for her, but the caretaker used it on herself instead, police said.

Police said Patrolman Mark Tagliareni saw Andres A. Segovia, 20, make a left at a red light at the Wyckoff and Godwin avenues intersection at 12:43 a.m. that day. Police said Tagliareni tried to stop Segovia, who accelerated and drove into a business complex at the Mahwah border.

During the ensuing investigation, Segovia was found to be in possession of a fake Connecticut driver's license that said he was 23. He was arrested and charged on a criminal complaint with possession of a fraudulent driver's license. He also was charged with failure to observe a traffic signal, reckless driving, driving without headlights and violating a provisional driver's license.

Segovia will appear in Municipal Court on May 13.
