Police Blotter: Criminal Mischief, Theft at School

A ruckus at Stop & Shop leads to an arrest; Student reports a stolen jacket.

Police arrested a 40-year-old Highland Lakes resident on charges of disorderly conduct and criminal mischief early Thursday morning. According to the report, police received a call from employees at Stop & Shop at the Franklin Crossing Shopping Center on Franklin Avenue at 4:43 a.m. complaining of an intoxicated man banging on the store window and trying to enter the store.

Police said the caller also reported damage to a vehicle in the parking lot, which police allege was caused by the suspect throwing rocks at the vehicle and breaking off the windshield wipers, an estimated $500 worth of damage. 

Witnesses told police the suspect then left the parking lot in a silver sedan. Police spotted the vehicle and pulled it over at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Colonial Road. The passenger, Shawn Vanderbrook, was identified as the suspect, and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal mischief.

On Wednesday, police received a report of a stolen jacket from a Ramapo High School student. According to the report, the jacked was stolen from her locker Feb. 9 and is valued at about $100.
