Old Mill Road Home Burglarized Tuesday Morning

Franklin Lakes Police say access gained through unlocked door

A Franklin Lakes resident returning to their home on Old Mill Road Tuesday afternoon discovered that burglars had ransacked the house and stolen several items, borough police said.

An unknown number of burglars entered the home through an unlocked side door sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., according to Lt. John Bakelaar.

"No alarm was received from the residence," Bakelaar said Wednesday, and "multiple rooms were ransacked."

Cops canvassed the surrounding area following the incident, Bakelaar said. He wouldn't comment on the results of the search, but no related arrests have been made as of Wednesday morning.

Detective Anthony Pacelli and officers Nicholas Klein and Mark McCombs investigated the incident.

Seven burglaries have been reported to Franklin Lakes Police so far this year, according to authorities.

When asked how borough residents can best protect themselves from similar incidents, Bakelaar stressed the importance of making your home look occupied and pointed homeowners to a Vacation Security Checklist guide on the Franklin Lakes website.
