Wyckoff police said Galdi was in possession of the gun legally.

The shooter was released in his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in municipal court.

"It is fortunate that someone nearby is not experiencing a tragic holiday season due to an errant bullet being fired in the immediate vicinity of homes and a church," Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin Fox said in a press release Friday.

An investigation is continuing to determine whether Galdi was on property owned by his family or owned by someone else; additional charges may follow that determination, police said.
