Mailbox-Knocking Teen Arrested on Drug Charges, Cops Say

According to police, a group of seven teens was found knocking down mailboxes, pulling out shrubs, and knocking over street signs in Wyckoff and Midland Park over the weekend.

A local teen was arrested on drug possession charges in Wyckoff over the weekend after cops found the boy and his friends knocking over mailboxes in the township, Police Chief Benjamin Fox said in a release Thursday morning.

After complaints about a group of teens knocking over mailboxes in Wyckoff and Midland Park, cops from both towns found the group on Burma Road in the township at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Fox said. The group knocked over at least 8 Wyckoff mailboxes, pulled a shrub from the lawn of one township home, and knocked over a street sign in Midland Park, Fox said.

Police found one of the boys, a 17-year-old from Waldwick, with 21 Clonazepam pills, a narcotic, in his possession, Fox said.

“If nothing else, this just further highlights that a lot of teens are involved with narcotics,” Fox said.

“It’s just what we are seeing unfortunately a lot of.”

According to Fox, cops also arrested a 16-year-old from Midland Park on criminal mischief charges.

Both teens were released to their parents and complaints were filed in Bergen County Juvenile Court, police said.

Wyckoff Sgt. Jack McEwan, Sgt. Daniel Kellogg, Ptl. William Plisich and responders from Midland Park found seven teens when they responded to the incident, Fox said.

“We do believe that there were more there, but that some ran off,” he said.

Investigations are ongoing into the other teens in the group, police said.
