Luring Attempt in Wyckoff False Alarm, Police Say

But, cops say they are glad the incident was reported, and any suspicious activity should be.

A luring attempt that was reported in Wyckoff Monday wasn’t actually a luring attempt, Police Chief Benjamin Fox announced Tuesday. But, the chief commended a young township resident who told adults about what she thought was an uncomfortable situation.

According to Fox, cops responded to Everett Avenue at 3:22 p.m. Monday to investigate a report of an attempted abduction of a young girl.

A 13-year-old girl saw two men sitting in an older gold car with the doors open, Fox said.

“She felt that they were looking at her, and because she was uncomfortable with the situation, she did the right thing and correctly walked away from the area,” he said.”

The girl told a parent, who told a friend and the incident was reported to police, he said.

An investigation into the incident found that it was “simply overstated” and that no luring attempt had occurred, Fox said. But, he said he’s glad the incident was reported, especially in light of actual luring incidents recently reported in other Bergen County towns.

“It was reported to police as it should have been, and this is a good teachable moment opportunity for parents to speak with their children about ‘stranger danger,’” Fox said.

“There is really nothing more important than the safety of our children.”

According to an nj.com report, police are investigating luring attempts in Hackensack, Leonia, Ridgefield Park, and Norwood.
