Ice Rescue Drills At Zabriskie

Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department fine-tuned Their Ice Rescue Skills at Zabriskie Pond Park on Saturday.

On Saturday the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department, along with its Northwest Bergen County Mutual Aid Shared Services neighboring municipalities of Franklin Lakes, Oakland and Waldwick,  fine-tuned their ice rescue skills at Zabriskie Pond Park.

Holes were cut into the ice and firefighters dressed in thermal wet suits were placed into the ice cold pond while the Fire Departments practiced its life saving rescue skills which allow firefighters to safely reach persons trapped in a frozen or a partially frozen water body. The four fire departments created real life situations and practiced ice rescue techniques with specially manufactured equipment that can be deployed to rescue single and multiple victims.

The equipment was purchased through a grant from the Bergen County 200 Club.

The Wyckoff Volunteer Ambulance Corps also participated in the 2 ½ hour training exercise. Approximately 30 firefighters from Wyckoff, 6 volunteers from the Wyckoff Ambulance Corps and 30 firefighters from the neighboring municipalities practiced techniques and procedures from 9:30 am until 12 noon.
