Godwin Road Work Slowing Traffic

Motorists routed around shopping centers

Road work began this morning at the intersection of Godwin and Franklin avenues, with detours slowing traffic through the downtown business district.

Godwin is closed from Greenwood to Franklin avenues from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday to allow construction crews to establish a sewer line extension to the future TD Bank, 290 Godwin Ave.

Work today was concentrated at the intersection, with construction crews excavating under the traffic light. Police are posted, although motorists are simply navigating around the closure.

Motorists driving north on Godwin have to make a left onto Wyckoff Avenue, right onto Main Street, right onto Wyckoff Avenue, right at Greenwood Avenue and then a left to continue on Godwin, essentially driving around Boulder Run and the Greenwood Avenue shopping center.

Those coming south on Godwin must exit right onto Greenwood, left at WyckoffAvenue, left onto Main Street, left onto Franklin Avenue and right at Godwin to head toward Midland Park.

However, many motorists could be observed cutting the detour short by turning into the Stop & Shop parking lot off Greenwood and driving through Boulder Run to get back to Franklin Avenue.

The daily closures shouldn't impact rush-hour traffic too greatly, as crews are expected to keep their work contained to the daytime. Evening and weekend work will only be performed if necessary. The work is expected to be complete within a month to five weeks.

The township will post any updates on detours and closures on its Web site,  www.wyckoff-nj.com.
