Teen Shot Neighbor with Airsoft Gun, Cops Say

Victim, shot in the arm, was uninjured

A trio of minors were taking turns firing a pellet-type gun in the backyard of a Franklin Avenue home Thursday afternoon when one of them shot a neighbor in the arm, resulting in charges against the 17-year-old alleged shooter, said.

The victim didn't sustain any serious injuries as a result, but the 17-year-old male who shot the Airsoft gun will be charged with simple assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Franklin Lakes Lieutenant John Bakelaar said Monday. The juvenile charged was also the owner of the gun.

"There was no argument or interaction involved between the involved parties," Bakelaar said. The boys were firing at a target in the backyard when, police allege, the juvenile fired in the direction of the victim, not the target. No motive had been established, Bakelaar added.

Because of the juvenile's age, the charges will be forwarded to the Bergen County Family Court, Bakelaarsaid.

The two other juveniles who were firing the gun at targets in the backyard were not charged with any crimes.
